Middle-age fitness chips away at chronic disease later in life | MNN ...
People who are physically fit during middle age have not only a higher chance of living longer, but also are less likely to suffer from chronic diseases later in life, compared with their less fit counterparts, a new study says.

Researchers measured the physical fitness of nearly 19,000 healthy people in their 30s, 40s and 50s using a treadmill test, and then compared their chronic diseases in their 70s and 80s. They found that the fittest people were nearly half as likely to suffer from a chronic disease compared with the least fit.?
Additionally, they found a 20 percent increase in fitness?during middle age was associated with a 20 percent decreased risk of developing any of the eight chronic diseases looked at in the study.?
"Being fit is not just delaying the inevitable, but it is actually lowering the onset of chronic disease?in the final years of life," said study author Dr. Jarett Berry, assistant professor of internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.?
The researchers used data gathered by the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study, which began in 1970. For the new findings, researchers measured each participant's fitness by observing them on a treadmill, and grouped them into five levels of fitness, taking age and gender into account.

As the participants approached old age, the researchers looked at how many of them had eight chronic diseases: heart failure, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease, Alzheimer's, colon or lung cancer, heart disease and lung disease. The researchers obtained the data on chronic diseases from Medicare claims the participants filed between ages 70 and 85.??
Though studies have shown that fitness may increase longevity, the new research shows that it also can stave off chronic diseases, meaning that in addition to living longer, those who were fit in middle age also improve their quality of life into old age, the researchers said.

The effects lasted to the end of life, with fitter people living with less chronic disease even during the last five years of their lives.

The researchers had also asked participants during middle age about exercise habits; however, their performance on the treadmill test is what ultimately represented their fitness.?
In an accompanying editorial, Dr. Diane Bild of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, noted that tests of physical endurance were more strongly linked with longevity and instance of chronic disease, most likely because the test is objective, while self-reporting exercise is not.

Though the nearly 80 percent of the study participants were male, both men and women saw the protective effects of such exercise. The authors acknowledged that those included in the study tended to be well-educated and were primarily white, so the results may not apply to the general population.

Adults are recommended to get at least 150 minutes of physical activity weekly, the authors noted.

Priced at $130 the feature set should be familiar by now: plug it into a home network that also has a TiVo Premiere series DVR connected to it, and it takes in live or recorded programming and reformats it for viewing on a mobile device. Currently those mobile devices are limited to the iOS family, but TiVo says Android access is coming. According to the company, the Stream is the first device to allow streaming and recording to as many as four devices without interrupting what's currently being viewed on the TV.
Comparing it to the others, live streaming or VOD in and out of the home on mobile devices is a feature several cable / satellite companies offer, Dish Network has tight Sling integration for streaming in multiple locations, and both DirecTV's Nomad and the Monsoon Vulkano boxes do place-shifting, the a combination of features plus a familiar TiVo UI puts the Stream in the lead, at least on paper. Charlottesville women take on breast cancer | The Cavalier Daily
This weekend more than 3,500 women will don their running shoes and take to the Charlottesville streets to raise money for the University?s breast cancer treatment and prevention programs by taking part in the Charlottesville Women?s Four Miler.
Participants have raised about $166,000 leading up to the 30th anniversary of the event, and for the 20th year in a row proceeds go to the U.Va. Cancer Center Breast Care Program.
These funds go toward supporting the High Risk Breast and Ovarian Cancer Program, which gives women the tools to determine their risk of breast and ovarian cancer.
In addition, donations help purchase ?Navigational Notebooks? for women who have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer, said Cancer Center development liaison Casey Hull. The binders provide cancer patients with information about research, physicians, staff, treatment options, and it even includes a layout to help them navigate the hospital.
?Once you get the diagnosis, you inevitably go through panic mode,? Hull said. ?Then it?s time to figure out what to do next. That?s where the notebooks come in.?
The organization also helps women whose insurance won?t cover imaging using a new type of imaging, Hull said. The new imaging system is pain- and compression-free, greatly easing the process for high-risk women who need frequent mammograms.
?For women who have a genetic history [of breast cancer] it makes a world of difference,? Hull said.
Beyond aiming to raise money for a good cause, the race also is an opportunity to remember loved ones lost to breast cancer and celebrate those who have survived it. If interested, participants can pay an extra $50 to have a poster with the name of a person affected by breast cancer hung up on the fence lining the last mile of the race ? the ?Motivational Mile.?
?A lot of women will tear down the posters and run across the finish line with them,? Hull said. ?It?s really touching to see and that?s something different about this race that I really like.?
The Charlottesville Women?s Four Miler kicks off Saturday at 8 a.m and begins and ends at the site of the Foxfield Races.

Ryan gets hometown send-off before trip to Tampa
JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) ? A raucous crowd cheered native son Paul Ryan on Monday as he prepared to accept the Republican Party's vice presidential nomination. He pledged to take the values of his family's longtime hometown to the White House.
Ryan, a congressman from Wisconsin whose district includes his Janesville hometown, arrived in the gymnasium of the high school where he cheered classmates more than two decades ago to signs welcoming "Paul Ryan: The Pride of Janesville" and two minutes of solid applause. Several times he recognized faces and waved.
"Everywhere I look, I see friends, I see community leaders, I see family members," he said in this town of about 63,000.
The send-off was a local-boy-done-good tribute and a preview of what aides said would be his message to the thousands of delegates gathered in Tampa, Fla., for the convention ? and the millions of voters who will look at him for the first time when he accepts the nomination and addresses the convention Wednesday night.
"We have a big choice to make. We're not just picking the next president for a few years. We are picking the pathway for America for a generation," Ryan said. "And what Mitt Romney and I pledge is to make sure that you get to choose: What kind of country do we want to have? What kind of people do we want to be?"
While the audience was friendly, Romney's first few weeks in the spotlight as running mate to GOP presidential candidate Romney brought new scrutiny to House Republican budget proposals he authored, and specifically to his idea to transform Medicare for future generations. Looking to soften Democrats' criticisms that the GOP would end the health care program for seniors, Ryan cited local civic groups such as food banks who help neighbors in need.
"What we do in our communities is we look out for one another. That's what governing can't replace or displace," he said. "You know, they call it civil society. I call it Janesville, Wis."
The rally took on the tone of an extended family reunion at times, with Ryan's brother introducing him. The prideful audience held signs proclaiming "Wisconsin Believes" and "Romney-Ryan."
Former state Sen. Ted Kanavas recalled bumping into Ryan around town and asked the crowd how many others had run into the congressman at the grocery or video store. The room erupted with applause.
"Paul is an accessible person who you can walk up to and talk to. That's the Paul we know and that's the Paul we're sharing with the country," Kanavas said, ignoring the fact that easy access to Ryan would disappear if Romney is elected.
"So from everyone in Janesville: Paul, we support you, we are with you and we are wishing you a great convention. Keep doing us proud," he continued to cheers.
Aides said Monday that Ryan would head to Florida on Tuesday, a day later than expected.
GOP officials trimmed the convention by a day, to three days, because of the threat from Tropical Storm Isaac, which had veered away from Tampa and was headed out over the Gulf of Mexico on Monday. It was expected to become a hurricane and possibly hit the Gulf region late Tuesday.
Ryan mentioned Isaac once during the rally, saying his hopes and prayers are with "those still standing in the path of the storm."

Claire Vickery was not surprised when scientists announced that eating disorders have a genetic link, because she and her two daughters suffered from the illness.
Eating disorders specialist Professor Howard Steiger, of McGill University in Montreal, told a conference in Adelaide last week that new discoveries in epigenetics show mothers pass a genetic predisposition to eating disorders to their children.
?The science of epigenetics is relatively new,? he said at the National Eating Disorders Collaboration National Workshop. ?Epigenetics helps explain how adverse development, stress, malnutrition and other influences can affect development of mental-health problems ? including eating disorders.?
Ms Vickery, 56, said she had bulimia from the ages of 16 to 29. ?I?m sure I?m carrying the gene.?
However, the president of the Australian and New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders, Dr Anthea Fursland, said that genes alone would not result in a child developing an eating disorder. ?Genetic influences do play a part but they will not cause an eating disorder on their own,? she said. ?Eating disorders arise as result of a combination of factors but the common factor in every case is dieting.?
Ms Vickery?s two daughters, Anna and Laura, both had eating disorders when they were younger. They have all recovered but Ms Vickery?s experience led her to set up the Butterfly Foundation, which encourages prevention, treatment and support of those affected by eating disorders.
Professor Steiger said epigenetics would play a large role in understanding eating disorders. ?If eating disorders are about anything, they?re about the ways in which environments switch on hereditary vulnerabilities,? he said.
?It will give us a better understanding how it is that some people develop an eating disorder. It?s not due to moral weakness or character flaws, but real susceptibilities, for which we can find real physical evidence.?
By identifying the genes, he hopes to develop a test and even medication.
One of Ms Vickery?s daughters, Anna Spraggett, who is 33 and has three children, said she was excited about the discovery. ?It?s a positive step forward to finding a cure and treatment,? she said.
While she thinks that environmental factors play a part, Ms Vickery said if parents were aware their children were susceptible, they could be mindful of stressful triggers.
?This is not about guilt for mothers,? she said. ?But if there was a take-home message, it?s to choose your words with children ? no fat talk in the household ? or ever, in fact.?

Indeed, given how easily a champion can manipulate the drug tests, it is often the only way the rules can be enforced.
I suspect that when Tyler Hamilton's damning book comes out next month "The Secret Race: Inside the Hidden World of the Tour de France: Doping, Cover-ups and Winning at All Costs",?it will deepen the debate in this country and begin to embarrass Armstrong's sponsors to an intolerable extent. It's only normal for the initial American reaction to be one of denial given how hard Armstrong has fought these charges for so many years, along with being not only cycling's greatest champion but also a major force against cancer.
Still, this gloss must wear off eventually.
Indeed, his own fight with cancer becomes tarnished by the possibility that his doping was a causal factor in his contracting the disease to begin with.
When such high-profile sponsors as these double down on denial, it allows the rest of his supporters and other athletes to continue living a lie. It turns blind eye to the damage doping does to athletes already under intense physical and psychological pressure. As Hamilton's book will describe in chilling detail, this atmosphere pushes many to substance abuse, depression and even suicide.
Corporations that ultimately depend on these athletes have a responsibility to do whatever they can to protect them from the pressure to dope. The least they can do to encourage cyclists not to engage in that practice is to drop their sponsorship of anyone found guilty. To continue supporting Armstrong at this point may feel like loyalty. But soon, that loyalty will begin to feel more like craven disregard for the integrity of the sport and the wellbeing of its athletes.

Lenovo ThinkStation S30
As is the case with any other computer, the desktop workstation for you is the one that comes closest to meeting your specific needs. If you're shopping for a do-everything business system, there's a compelling case to be made for the Lenovo ThinkStation S30: It blends high-level processing with graphics performance, giving you enough general strength to do almost anything you want. But digging down a bit deeper reveals this as a computer more aptly suited to video-oriented tasks than for traditional data-crunching uses, which may or may not be right for you. If you think your business will benefit from the balance it provides, the ThinkStation may be worth its fairly steep price. If not, other, less-expensive systems may better suit your needs.
Design and Features
Under normal circumstances you shouldn?t expect a workstation to excel in the looks department, and that's a standard the ThinkStation S30 lives up to. Basic black from stem to stern, with little to distinguish it except a bit of hexagonal mesh ornamentation on the front, it looks austere and serious, as though it?s interested in nothing more than getting right to work. In accordance with this, it?s largely bereft of exciting features, the most notable exception being the sturdy handle affixed to the front of the top panel. This makes the system easy to carry, deploy, and pull out from the cubbies beneath desks where it?s most likely to be stored. A latch on the side panel opens the PC instantly, without requiring you to even remove thumbscrews.
Just as its outward appearance is of the buttoned-down, do-the job mentality, so is the S30?s hardware both inside and out. At the heart of it all is a fine Intel Xeon E5-1620 CPU; the quad-core chip can run eight threads a time thanks to Intel?s Hyper-Threading technology, and runs at a highly respectable clock speed of 3.6GHz. Joining it is a solid 8GB of RAM, which is upgradable to as much as 128GB (only two of the eight DIMM slots are full), and a 2GB Nvidia Quadro 4000 workstation video card that sports one DVI and two full-size DisplayPort outputs. (The card is held in place inside the computer by two large, potentially difficult-to-remove plastic brackets.) Should you want to install additional cards, there's another PCI Express (PCIe) x16 slot, one PCIe x4 slot, one PCIe x1 slot, and one traditional PCI slot still available for this.
Two 7,200rpm 500GB hard drives in a RAID Level 0 configuration provide the storage, and can be expanded by way of two internal SATA ports; the optical drive is a standard, but undeniably useful, DVD?RW. An external multiformat card reader supports the CF, XD, SD, and MS formats. Should you wish to expand further, there are two open bays: one external 5.25-inch and one internal 3.5-inch. The included 610-watt power supply is more than sufficient for these components, and should give you a bit of freedom for later expansion.
Externally, ten USB 2.0 ports and two USB 3.0 ports provide you plenty of connectivity opportunities; but there are only two USB 2.0 ports on the front panel, along with the headphone and microphone jacks, and hooking up the included keyboard and mouse will remove two of the others from play right off the bat. The preinstalled operating system is the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Professional, and comes bearing a bit of bloatware: Rescue and Recovery, Adobe Reader, Microsoft Office 2010 Starter, WinDVD, Ulead DVD Movie Factory, and a 30-day trial of Norton Internet Security. (The chances are good that your organization will have your own solutions, so you?ll probably have at least a little bit of uninstallation to do.)
At least you receive some fairly robust protection with the S30: It?s covered by a three-year parts-and-labor warranty, and you have access to around-the-clock toll-free technical support.
Performance
The ThinkStation S30 delivered excellent performance?enough to earn the top score we've seen in this class (3,494) in our Futuremark PCMark 7 full-system benchmark. It faltered, however, in Handbrake, CineBench R11.5, and Adobe Photoshop CS5, in each surpassed only by the Dell Precision T1600 . The Dell?s lead in each case was not overwhelming?1 minute 13 seconds in Handbrake (versus 1:14 for the S30), 6.87 in CineBench (versus 6.38), and 2:57 in Photoshop (versus 3:01)?but enough to show that raw processing is not necessarily the ThinkStation's greatest strength.
Lenovo does come out securely on the top in one area. Although we know that no one would ever deign to use a workstation as beefy as the S30 for gaming, its upper-end video card gives it enough oomph to occupy the top of the results chart for Futuremark 3DMark 11 and for our gaming tests at lower resolutions and detail settings. These numbers could be improved by swapping out the Quadro for a dedicated gaming card, but at the business tasks for which S30 was intended the original card is definitely the preferable way to go.
That Quadro 4000, by the way, is the best argument in favor of the Lenovo ThinkStation S30: It gives this system powerful capabilities that could serve you well in all manner of drafting and rendering scenarios. But because those are specialized needs that won't apply to everyone, we're sticking with the Dell Precision T1600 as our Editors' Choice: It's a slightly stronger performer in terms of everyday processing, and costs nearly $500 less, making it more attractive for a broader range of professional uses. If, on the other hand, you need that extra graphics oomph, the ThinkStation S30 is an excellent choice.
