Student Aid Report: Read it and Weep - How Will I Pay for College?

How quickly you receive the SAR depends on how you filed your FAFSA. If you file a paper FAFSA, it may take 2-3 weeks, or more. If you file electronically through the Department of Education website, your SAR can be available in 3 to 10 days. However, if you do not receive your SAR within 4 weeks, ?you should call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID or 1-319-337-5665. ?They will ask for some identification information (Social Security number, date of birth, etc), and then they will let you know if your FAFSA has been processed. You can also write to the?Federal Student Aid Information Center?for the status of your FAFSA at:

Federal Student Aid Programs

Washington, DC 52243-4038

The SAR will summarize the information on the FAFSA, and tell ?you how much Pell Grant money you qualify for, your calculated Expected Family Contribution (EFC), as well as a summary of any outstanding loans. Note also that the SAR will contain a Data Release Number (DRN), a four-digit reference number that you will need if you want to send the SAR to additional schools that you did not include when you filed your FAFSA. Students should keep a copy of their SAR in their college folder (you did start a folder, didn't you?).

If you review your SAR and find a mistake, you will need to correct or update your FAFSA. ?You can ?make changes to the FAFSA in one of three different ways:
  • Online FAFSA Corrections? You can go to the FAFSA website and make online corrections by selecting "Make FAFSA Corrections" after logging in. This is the fastest way to update your application, and highly recommended. You will need the student PIN you received when initially registering at the FAFSA website.?If the student is a dependent, a parent PIN is required as well.?You can correct anything on the application except for the student's Social Security Number (SSN). If you made a mistake in reporting your SSN, ask the financial aid office at the school you plan to attend whether you should start over again and submit a new FAFSA.?The financial aid office might be able to make other changes for you electronically, as well.?
  • Paper FAFSA Corrections?Write the corrections or changes directly on your paper SAR, sign it, and mail it to the address provided on the SAR (keep a copy in your folder, remember?)
  • Phone FAFSA Corrections You can add a school to your FAFSA by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243. You will need to provide your DRN, which is found both on your SAR and online on the FAFSA website.
After your target schools receive your SAR and prepare your financial aid package, they will send an award letter to you (which you will keep in your folder). This Financial Aid Award Notice can be confusing (perhaps even misleading), though the Department of Education is attempting to clarify and standardize this (see the second paragraph of this post).?

After you receive all of your financial aid notices, you can follow these steps to figure out your ?net cost for each school on a comparable basis, to see which school is most affordable for you.
  • First, find the total cost of attendance for your program on the aid letter (you may need to?ask the financial aid office of that school if it is not clearly listed in the letter). Be ?sure it includes what you pay directly to the school (tuition, room & board, and fees) as well as other costs (living expenses, books & supplies, and transportation).
  • Next, subtract the grant and scholarship amounts (Pell Grants, FSEOG, school grants/scholarships, etc) on your aid offer from the cost of attendance. This is free money that does not have to be repaid, and reduces your tuition directly. Also subtract any savings you have available to put toward your school costs for the upcoming school year (either a 529 plan or other savings). The remaining amount is your net out-of-pocket cost.
  • Finally, compare the net costs for all of the schools you are considering. The net cost is the amount you will have to pay out of your pocket, using earnings from work or from student loans that you will need to apply for (or perhaps from your crowdfunding efforts!)

While all of this government paperwork might remind of filing your income taxes, I highly recommend that you do not hire one of the organizations that offer to fill out your FAFSA (or help you to fill it out). The questions are really quite simple (though some terms and acronyms can slow you down), and many won't apply to you. Just take your time, get educated, and read the paperwork carefully, and you can get through this in no time.

Resolution on sharing family history ? more 'kindling,' less 'swamping'

Any genealogist will tell you that one of the most rewarding things that can happen is for one of your family members to show an interest in your shared ancestry.

Before my niece, Stephanie Taylor, married Andrew Zimmerman, she told me that she would like to have as a wedding gift a one-page pedigree chart for each of them that could be framed and hung on their wall.

I was so touched to have her make this request, and arranged to have the framed charts compiled, wrapped and placed under the Christmas tree this year at my sister?s house to surprise the young couple.

Did I mention that Stephanie and Andy were married in October? That?s October ? last year.

Now that I?ve done the project, framed it and actually given it to the young couple, you can guess what my message for the new year is about sharing family history:

Don?t wait.

Whether your genealogy is in a computer or handwritten on sheets of paper, it?s not a big deal to make copies and put them in a simple three-ring binder for the intended relative. This makes updating easy because you can just give out updated pages as they are ready.

But don?t overlook the value ? and fun ? in sharing just a page of your pedigree.

In my early days of genealogical research, I often overwhelmed my dad and other relatives by trying to communicate everything I?d found about the family all at once.

What works better, of course, is sharing information on your heritage in manageable bites. My uncle Roddy Moore once asked for information on our Bennetts, as he and my dad and their siblings were very close to their Bennett grandparents, who were in fact, both Bennetts. I focused on what he wanted to know.

What I realized while doing the recent project for my niece is that a one-page pedigree chart, even if it reaches back only three generations, can represent a good amount of heritage. Moreover, confining the information to one page communicates in a simple way that can be understood.

The pedigree chart for my niece encompasses all eight of her great-grandparents ? Taylor, Willis, Marble, Osberg, Moore, Bennett, Steeves and Roberts. The Osbergs were from Sweden, and the early Steeves ancestors from Wurtemburg, Germany.

Her husband?s great-grandparents have surnames Zimmerman, Andrews, Atkinson, Soper, Higgins, Farmer, Hanson and Strout. Zimmerman is a German name. (Broadway and film star Ethel Merman was born Ethel Agnes Zimmerman.)

I printed off the pedigree charts on my Family Treemaker program and framed them. I also printed off an extra copy of each one for Stephanie and Andy?s parents: Scott and Maureen (Moore) Taylor and Ralph and Joyce (Higgins) Zimmerman.

When I find new information to add to the charts, or if Stephanie and Andy learn new things from their families, I can easily print off updated charts for them to use to replace the ones hanging on their wall.

Now that I?ve completed these first one-page projects, I can think of other relatives who would appreciate having the same thing for their home, even one family that already has a notebook I did with several charts in it.

After 35 years of research, all it took was one special niece to help me think in terms of kindling the family?s interest in genealogy, rather than swamping them with information.

Thanks, Stephanie Taylor Zimmerman.

The national anthem is a difficult song to sing, requiring a range of voice I would never expect in youngsters.

So it is a pleasure to offer an ?A-plus? to three young ladies, approximately the age of fifth-graders, who gave their best during the Veterans Day dedication of the Bangor World War II Memorial at Cole Land Transportation Museum.

Emily Mock, Rachael Kiah and Ceci Doering stood up on the bench where they had been sitting and treated some 200 in attendance to one wonderful performance of ?The Star-Spangled Banner.?

It was more than a treat ? it was a blessing. It also was a worthy tribute to the memory of 112 Bangor veterans killed during World War II.

(AP) ? The plan is as big as this mammoth city: Turn a seedy metro hub into Mexico City's Times Square; clear swarms of feisty vendors and remodel the historic Alameda Central; illuminate the plazas and walkways of a park twice the size of New York's Central Park.

Mexico City's government is trying to transform one of the world's largest cities by beautifying public spaces, parks and monuments buried beneath a sea of honking cars, street hawkers, billboards and grime following decades of dizzying urban growth.

Despite the challenges, the ambitious, multimillion-dollar program carried out by former center-left Mayor Marcelo Ebrard and continued by his successor, Miguel Angel Mancera, is winning praise from urban planners and many residents. And it's turning the metropolis into an experiment in how to soften urban sprawl.

"It's time to tame the city," said Juan Carlos de Leo Gandara, head of the Iberoamerican University's sustainable urban projects. "Today is about giving the city back to pedestrians."

In the Alameda, made iconic in the Diego Rivera mural "Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in the Alameda," concrete sidewalks were replaced by marble, and makeshift vendor stands were kicked out ? a renovation that cost about $18.7 million. Instead of a motley patchwork of folding tables and tarps, the newly opened park, anchored by the art nouveau Palacio de Bellas Artes theater, is a sea of greenery and calm in the midst of racing traffic.

"It used to be very dark, with no lighting. It really wasn't a place to bring my son," said Alma Rosa Romero, a 32-year-old housewife standing by the new dancing-water fountains, holding her child's hand. "Now it's beautiful."

Other completed projects include a once-neglected plaza with an Arc de Triumph-style monument to Mexico's 1910 revolution, which has been remade at a cost of $28.6 million from a homeless encampment to an oasis where families frolic and children run through spurts of water gushing out of the pavement. The copper dome of what started out as the country's Congress building is newly polished and gleaming.

Downtown, at the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception of Tlaxcoaque, the city has installed multi-colored fountains that light up at night and replaced a parking lot with a larger plaza for pedestrians. The city has also converted Francisco I. Madero street in the historic center into a pedestrian walkway stretching to the Zocalo, the plaza that's home to the National Palace and massive Metropolitan Cathedral. And under a popular bridge near the hip neighborhood of Condesa, the city made way for a taco joint and a playground.

"A city where people go out to the streets is safe, happier and raises the quality of life," said Daniel Escotto, chief architect of Mexico City's Public Areas Office, which was founded in 2008 to manage urban renewal. "We are renovating floors, facades and adding plants and lighting and more elements that can shape this concept."

Yet in a city defined in many ways by its disorder, the plan is also being slammed by those who take pride in surviving the urban jungle.

"Yes it's safer, and it's renovated, but what happens to the emblem of Mexico City?" said Baltazar Romeo, 47, a hospital worker eating a sandwich at the newly remodeled Alameda. Gone were the street performers who once dressed as the Three Wise Men during Christmas and charged tips for photos with children. "The city is becoming soulless," Romeo said.

One of the flagship renovation projects is the once-seedy, swarming Glorieta de Insurgentes, a roundabout and metro station in central Mexico City that sees hundreds of thousands of commuters pour through every day.

The circular plaza was sunk to let pedestrians stream below busy thoroughfares and catch their trains or buses or just hang out. Around its rim careen cars in a roundabout that briefly merges two of the city's biggest thoroughfares, the mighty Insurgentes and Chapultepec avenues.

When the plaza was built in 1969, the city's top priority was moving an onslaught of cars and people from one point to another. Highways and beltways elsewhere went up to cope with the population boom, and sprawl spread farther out. Once-famous and safe streets and plazas suffered from neglect by planners and became slum-like neighborhoods people avoided after sunset. A brown haze covered the new skyline as motorists became the focus of the new infrastructure.

The Insurgentes roundabout turned into a place to hurry through. Homeless people took over abandoned warehouses nearby while surrounding office and apartment buildings fell into disrepair. Many of the plaza's shops became sleazy Internet cafes cowering beneath giant billboards.

"It couldn't be more hostile to public life or pedestrian life," said Ken Greenberg, a Toronto-based architect and urban designer who recently visited Mexico. "The whole thing just has a kind of very harsh feeling of a highway right in the middle of the city."

Urban designers are now seeking to infuse the chaos with the glitzy excitement of Times Square or London's Piccadilly Circus. Sixty-foot cylinders covered with circular screens streaming LED tickers have already been erected. The crabgrass-filled flower beds and low benches used as skateboard launches have been bulldozed for a sleek open-air look bathed in white, patterned concrete.

The makeover is meant to create a more appealing space for commuters using bikes and public transit in a city that won infamy as the world's most painful for commuters in a 2011 IBM survey.

"What Mexico City needs is to emphasize its identity through its public spaces," Escotto said.

The government says the Insurgentes project will also debut a new model for restricting advertising to designated spots. In 2010, local government banned advertisements on all public and private buildings, threatening a $9,000 fine for those who refused to comply. Two years later, however, the city is still blanketed by billboards.

Future projects include a cleanup of 67 bridges around the city and more lighting for plazas and walkways throughout Chapultepec Park, Mexico City's grand urban green space.

Some projects, including the Insurgentes roundabout, are being completed with the help of private funds. The roundabout renovation includes $4.5 million from 15 advertising companies that are erecting the giant LED screens. Critics worry the arrangement will benefit private companies more than city residents. Much of the beautification of the historic center was paid for by telecommunications billionaire Carlos Slim.

Some wonder whether Mancera, who is from Ebrard's party, will continue the effort and whether the city has the money to maintain its improvements. The question for this teeming city is whether its attempt to clean up will hold or whether the sprawl will ultimately prove more powerful.

"How is this work going to look in the next five months, or five years?" asked De Leo Gandara of the Iberoamerican University. "Will they preserve it? Will it still be clean? Are they keeping it together or is it forgotten again?"

Poor reading skills tied to risk of teen pregnancy

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Seventh grade girls who have trouble reading are more likely to get pregnant in high school than average or above-average readers, according to a new study from Philadelphia.

Researchers found that pattern stuck even after they took into account the girls' race and poverty in their neighborhoods - both of which are tied to teen pregnancy rates.

"We certainly know that social disadvantages definitely play a part in teen pregnancy risk, and certainly poor educational achievement is one of those factors," said Dr. Krishna Upadhya, a reproductive health and teen pregnancy researcher from Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore.

Poor academic skills may play into how teens see their future economic opportunities and influence the risks they take - even if those aren't conscious decisions, explained Upadhya, who wasn't involved in the new research.

Dr. Ian Bennett from the University of Pennsylvania and his colleagues looked up standardized test reading scores for 12,339 seventh grade girls from 92 different Philadelphia public schools and tracked them over the next six years.

During that period, 1,616 of the teenagers had a baby, including 201 that gave birth two or three times.

Hispanic and African American girls were more likely than white girls to get pregnant. But education appeared to play a role, as well.

Among girls who scored below average on their reading tests, 21 percent went on to have a baby as a teenager. That compared to 12 percent who had average scores and five percent of girls who scored above average on the standardized tests.

Once race and poverty were taken into consideration, girls with below-average reading skills were two and a half times more likely to have a baby than average-scoring girls, according to findings published in the journal Contraception.

Birth rates among girls ages 15 through 19 were at a record low in the U.S. in 2011 at 31 births for every 1,000 girls, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But that rate is still much higher in minority and poorer girls than in white, well-off ones, researchers noted.

And in general, it's significantly higher than teen birth rates in other wealthy nations.

Teen pregnancies are a concern because young moms and their babies have more health problems and pregnancy-related complications, and girls who get pregnant are at higher risk of dropping out of school.

Upadhya said the answer to preventing teen pregnancy in less-educated girls isn't simply to add more sex ed to the curriculum.

"This is really about adolescent health and development more broadly, so it's really important for us to make sure that kids are in schools and in quality educational programs and that they have opportunities to grow and develop academically and vocationally," she told Reuters Health.

"That is just as important in preventing teen pregnancy as making sure they know where to get condoms."

Is Google Using AdWords Express Budgets To Promote Google+?

Google now offers small businesses using its AdWords Express service a way to promote their Google+ pages seemingly everywhere but on Google+ itself, which Google reasserts should be an ad-free zone. That?omission may make these ads less effective for those seeking new customers or followers to their Google+ pages. Meanwhile, the push gets those same small businesses spending their advertising dollars to promote Google+ itself for Google.

AdWords Express & Google+ Pages

In case you?re not?familiar?with AdWords Express, it?s Google?s version of automated paid search. With AdWord Express, small and local businesses who are in a time crunch and don?t have time to properly set up campaigns let Google run their ads. Google then chooses where to show the ads. Some will appear in Google search results, based on terms that Google selects. Some appear within Google Maps. Some appear on non-Google sites that are part of the Google advertising network.

Since some small businesses don?t have web sites, Google has offered them free ones to use with AdWords Express through its Get Your Business Online service. But now, Google has said businesses can drive visitors to their Google+ pages.

In a?post?late last week Christian Oestlien, a member of?Google Product Management, announced that AdWords Express would now ?offer? businesses a new way to promote their Google+ pages:

Along with the announcement Oestlien mentioned that this option would be available for all Google properties ? except, well, Google+. In fact Oestlien took a puesdo-swing at Facebook by stating:

? we only show these promotions when they?re appropriate?not overwhelming people with random ads when they?re trying to spend time with friends

Why No Advertising On Google+?

Many could argue that if you are trying ?attract more followers? they would want to do so on Google+ itself. Why show social network ads in search? Why show them for your Google+ page in maps? This is a hard stance that Google+ took throughout 2012. But the thing is, social ads work. There simply isn?t a better place for admins to try and grow fans with ads than from targeted ads in the social network.

Well, Can You Advertise To Just Google+ Users?

The answer is no. A Google representative?confirmed to us that the only targeting option is ?normal targeting,? so it will reach everyone. This is a huge negative for those AdWords Express advertisers who are trying to build a following for their Google+ page. Seeing that you can?t advertise on the social network and you can?t target those across the Google network with a Google+ enabled account, you have no guarantee that a click is coming from someone who has a Google+ account or if they have even heard of Google+ before.

So Just What Is This New Service That Google Is ?Offering??

The 10,000 foot view of this announcement reads like this:

  • You give your money to Google to handle online advertising
  • Google spends your money across their network
  • Instead of driving traffic to your site, the new?announcement??offers? businesses the ability to let Google drive traffic to a Google property
  • The goal is to ?attract new followers and customers? but Google can?t show ads within the social network itself.
  • Nor can active Google+ users be targeted

Why Is This A Bit Suspect?

While Google+ has been relatively successful, it has come at the hands of a huge investment. From advertising during big NFL games, to worldwide print and TV campaigns, to big NFL partnerships, Google has spent?inordinate marketing resources on the Google+ product. In a way, Google is now leveraging AdWords Express users? budgets to do so too.

The glaring lack of ability to target ads on Google+ itself, or even to target users who are on Google+ makes for un-targeted, poor advertising for those looking to build their pages. The majority of those users who click will have to be sold on Google+ first before they can follow a brand page. Instead of hitting active users, advertisers are simply handing money to Google to blast the budget across the general Google network.

None of the other social networks operate in this fashion. Facebook offers a variety of advertising options across the social network, Twitter has a handful of ad options across Twitter. The key is that all of these are on the network that has that social scent trail to it.

So Is This New Service Helpful For Anyone?

Is this worth doing? In some cases, absolutely. If a company doesn?t have resources for a website and they don?t want to promote their Facebook page, this gives them an option to get up and running. If you are on a shoestring budget and need a landing page, this option may?quench?your?thirst?for more eyeballs. The issue isn?t with the ?attract new customers? statement that Oestlien made, but more about the attraction of new followers aspect as there is no Google+ user targeting built into the service.

While this new targeting may look valuable at-a-glance, severe lack of targeting makes it tough to recommend to anyone. From Google?s standpoint however, this would be an ideal selection for advertisers as a big byproduct of the budget is more awareness of the Google+ product.

(AP) ? When it comes to the nation's budget challenges, congressional leaders are fond of saying dismissively they don't want to kick the can down the road.

But now, a deadline hard ahead, even derided half-measures are uncertain as President Barack Obama and lawmakers struggle to avert across-the-board tax increases and spending cuts that comprise an economy-threatening fiscal cliff.

Congressional officials said Wednesday they knew of no significant strides toward a compromise over a long Christmas weekend, and no negotiations have been set.

After conferring on a conference call, House Republican leaders said they remain ready for talks, urged the Senate to consider a House-passed bill that extends all existing tax cuts, but gave no hint they intend to call lawmakers back into session unless the Senate first passes legislation.

"The lines of communication remain open, and we will continue to work with our colleagues to avert the largest tax hike in American history, and to address the underlying problem, which is spending," the leadership said in a statement.

A short while later Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. countered that the House leadership should allow action on a Senate-passed bill that lets income tax rates rise only on incomes above $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples. The measure could "pass tomorrow" if put to a vote, he said.

The Senate is due in session Thursday, although the immediate agenda includes legislation setting the rules for government surveillance of suspected spies and terrorists abroad, including Americans, as well as a measure providing $60 billion for victims of Superstorm Sandy.

Obama decided to cut short his Hawaii vacation for an overnight flight expected to get him back to the White House on Thursday.

Apart from the cliff, other financial challenges loom for divided government, where political brinkmanship has become the norm. The Treasury disclosed during the day it would take accounting measures to avoid reaching the government's borrowing limit of $16.4 trillion by year's end. The changes will provide about two months of additional leeway.

Separately, spending authority for much of the government will expire on March 27, 2013.

After weeks of negotiations, the president urged lawmakers late last week to scale back their ambitions for avoiding the fiscal cliff and send him legislation preventing tax cuts on all but the highest-earning Americans and extending unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless. Longer, term, he said he still supports deficit cuts that were key to the earlier talks.

"Everybody's got to give a little bit in a sensible way," he said at the White House.

The House has no plans to convene, following last week's rebellion in which conservatives torpedoed Speaker John Boehner's legislation to prevent scheduled tax increases on most, while letting them take effect on million-dollar wage earners.

"How we get there, God only knows," the Ohio Republican said of efforts to protect the economy ? and taxpayers ? from the tax increases and spending cuts.

"Now is the time to show leadership, not kick the can down the road," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said a little over a week ago after Boehner announced he would shift his own focus from bipartisan talks to the approach that eventually was torpedoed by his own rank and file.

It's a phrase that political leaders use when they want to suggest others want to avoid tackling major problems, and one that Boehner, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia and even Obama as well as Reid have used.

"We have a spending problem. We have to address it, And we're not going to address it by kicking the can down the road," the speaker said at a news conference late last week when he was asked about setting a vote on a plan that Democrats find acceptable.

Cantor recently used the same approach in challenging Obama to agree to savings from Medicare and other benefit programs. "This has to be a part of this agreement or else we just continue to dig the hole deeper, asking folks to allow us to kick the can down the road further and that we don't want to do," he said on Nov. 28.

In fact, it's a phrase that has been in use for over a year as Obama and Republicans jockey for position on pocketbook issues.

In July 2011, when he was struggling with Republicans over the threat of a first-ever government default, Obama said he had "heard reports that there may be some in Congress who want to do just enough to make sure that America avoids defaulting on our debt in the short term. But then wants to kick the can down the road when it comes to solving the larger problem, our deficit."

A few months later, an extension of a payroll tax cut was the issue, and Boehner was insisting on a year-long renewal rather than the temporary plan that passed the Senate with votes from lawmakers in both parties.

"How can you do tax policy for two months?" he asked on Dec. 18, 2011. "I believe that two months is just kicking the can down the road.

"The American people are tired of that."

At issue now is series of tax increases and spending cuts scheduled to kick in with the new year that economists caution could send the economy into a recession.

How to Fix a Nail Pop in Your Wall

How to Fix a Nail Pop in Your WallAs my six-year-old house has settled in, a few nails have popped out of the wall between drywall and wooden studs throughout seasons of the wood swelling and contracting. The easy way to remedy this situation is to drive in a drywall screw near the nail pop to keep the drywall paper in place and drive the nail into the stud, dimple the surface of the drywall around the nail by tapping it with the handle of a putty knife, and fill in both the dimple and the head of the new screw with drywall filler.

The weblog of home improvement magazine The Family Handyman shares this with eight other tips on how to prepare interior walls for painting. Make sure to check out the source link below if you're planning on this activity in the near future.

Deadmau5 Proposes To Kat Von D On Twitter

(CBS Local) Back in September, fans of dance music impresario Deadmau5, known to his family and friends as Joel Zimmerman, and celebrity-tattoo artist Kat Von D were stunned to learn of the seemingly odd pairing.

The couple were instantly public with their affection for each other which made some think it was a publicity stunt. But just weeks later, the couple was caught on camera hand-in-hand at a Las Vegas music festival.

Shortly after publicly professing their love to each other, the couple split. Then, a month later, and to the surprise of many, Deadmau5 and Kat Von D not only made up, but got engaged.

An internet addict who describes himself as "always connected," Deadmau5 proposed Saturday via Twitter in front of his 1.8 million followers. Von D accepted and the online love fest ensued. Check out the Twitter exchange here.

Impact of caring for adult child with disability studied

The study, published in Psychiatric Services, highlights economic and psycho-social challenges faced by parents of adult children with disabilities, compared with parents of children without disabilities.

When either parent becomes disabled, the study found, families' report lower financial well-being. This being especially true when an aging parent must contend with both the needs of an adult child with mental illness and a spouse who develops an age-related disability.

Not surprisingly, parents are themselves susceptible to developing disabilities and chronic conditions as they age. "By age 60, parents caring for adult children with mental illness were more likely to have a spouse with a disability, than parents of children with developmental disabilities or than those with whose children had no disabilities," Ghosh said.

When one parent of an adult child with mental illness became disabled, the family reported lower financial well-being than a comparison group that did not have a child with disabilities, she said. Parents of adult children with disabilities often bear the costs of care, as many expenses they incur are not fully covered by insurance.

The findings suggest that targeted policy measures may be needed to better support aging parents of adult children with disabilities. These families are highly vulnerable during retirement not only to the onset of their own disabilities, but also to dire financial consequences.

Ghosh's co-authors are Dr. Jan Greenberg and Dr. Marsha Seltzer of the Waisman Center and School of Social Work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The study drew its data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study, which has followed over 10,000 high school graduates and their families since 1957.

The study is available at PsychiatryOnline.

Israel pushes ahead with plan to build in East Jerusalem

Israel on Monday advanced a project to build hundreds of homes in East Jerusalem, pushing ahead with plans for a surge of settlement building on occupied land in response to a successful Palestinian bid to gain limited recognition of statehood at the United Nations.

The settlement expansion plans have drawn condemnations from Washington and from European nations, some of which have summoned Israeli ambassadors to lodge formal protests. But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is running in elections next month, has defied the calls to rescind the building plans.

A spokeswoman for Israel's Interior Ministry said Monday that a planning committee had approved another stage in plans for construction of 1,500 homes in Ramat Shlomo, an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood built on West Bank land annexed to Jerusalem after Israel captured the area in the 1967 Middle East war.

The plans caused a diplomatic flap when they were announced during Vice President Joe Biden's visit in 2010, drawing swift condemnation from him and straining Israel's ties with Washington. Further steps to promote the plan were suspended, but it has been reactivated after the vote at the U.N. General Assembly last month to upgrade the Palestinians' status to a non-member observer state.

The Interior Ministry spokeswoman said that final approval of the plan could take months to years, and that a similar housing development in another part of East Jerusalem was expected to be discussed by the planning panel on Tuesday. That project, known as Givat Hamatos, would extend a belt of Israeli neighborhoods on annexed land on Jerusalem's southern outskirts, further separating the city's Arab neighborhoods from the West Bank.

After the U.N. vote, Netanyahu approved the construction of 3,000 homes in West Bank settlements and in East Jerusalem, and the advancement of plans for a settlement corridor east of Jerusalem that is seen as critically damaging prospects for a territorially contiguous Palestinian state.

Mark Regev, a spokesman for Netanyahu, said the building plans approved Monday were simply "another procedural phase" in a process that "would've happened anyway," regardless of the recently announced settlement building drive.

But Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a spokesman for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, called the latest Israeli step "a flagrant defiance of the will of the entire international community."

Israel's continued expansion of settlements is at the core of the current impasse in peace efforts. The Palestinians, who seek a state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip with a capital in East Jerusalem, have refused to resume negotiations with Israel unless it halts settlement building on occupied land.

Netanyahu has called for a return to talks without preconditions, arguing that all key issues in dispute, including the settlements, could be discussed in the negotiations. He has condemned the Palestinians' U.N. statehood bid as an attempt to bypass such talks.

Candyland Employment Court Case To be Reheard | Stuff.co.nz

The owner of a prominent Waikato business has won the right to have an Employment Court case reheard, claiming financial burden and that the original decision was unfair.

Candyland owner and director Michele Coker was fined almost $12,000 by the Employment Relations Authority (ERA) in June after it found she had unjustifiably dismissed former employee Jo-Anne Jarvis in July 2011.

However Coker appealed the decision and was heard in the Employment Court in Auckland earlier this month, where Chief Judge Graeme Colgan ordered a conditional stay of execution on the Authority's decision.

Citing Candyland's clear financial pressures, Judge Colgan ordered that Coker pay $2000 per month to the Registrar of the Employment Court from 1 January 2013 where the money would be held until the outcome of a new hearing in March.

''If the plaintiff defaults on those payments then there will be no stay of execution of the Authority's determination and Ms Jarvis will be free to pursue her remedies in the usual way,'' he said.

Coker found herself on the wrong end of a personal grievance after dismissing part-time worker Jo-Anne Jarvis in July last year for serious misconduct.

Jarvis' husband, Barry, also worked for Candyland on an as-required basis.

As a show of support for his wife Jarvis stopped working for the firm following a discussion between his wife and employer on July 27 when Coker made it clear she did not want Jarvis back.

In June ERA member Rachel Larmer said Candyland's dismissal of Jarvis was unjustified stating that allegations of serious misconduct were not fair and reasonable.

In making her judgment Larmer said Jarvis was not without fault in contributing to her situation and took that into account when ordering Coker to pay costs amounting to more than $12,800.

Following the decision Coker said she felt like she had been ''kicked in the teeth'' by the ERA and was considering moving her candy making operation off-shore.

Coker said the difference between good staff and bad was a deal-breaker in a business like Candyland.

"As a manager I know that good staff is your best asset. I want them to enjoy their job and be happy and enjoy what they are doing that's important for the success of our business, " she said.

Final celebrity burglary defendant enters plea

(AP) ? The final defendant in a group charged with burglarizing celebrities' homes pleaded no contest Friday to receiving a jacket stolen from Paris Hilton.

Courtney Leigh Ames entered the plea and is expected to be sentenced on Feb. 1 to three years of supervised probation and 60 days of community service.

Prosecutors dropped felony residential burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary charges and another count of receiving stolen property in exchange for the plea.

Ames, who had been charged with breaking into Hilton's home, had also been accused of wearing a necklace stolen from Lindsay Lohan's home to court.

Authorities arrested most of the group in October 2009 and accused them of a months-long crime spree that netted more than $3 million in clothes, jewelry and art from the homes of stars such as Lohan, Hilton, Orlando Bloom and Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green.

All the stars have agreed not to seek restitution for their losses.

"From day one, we always knew that Courtney was the least culpable player in this group," her attorney, Robert Schwartz, said after the hearing. "In no way am I condoning or minimizing what was done to these various celebrities, but to connect Courtney Ames with these burglaries was just false."

One of the defendants, Alexis Neiers, quickly ended her case and starred in the short-lived E! Entertainment Television reality show "Pretty Wild," which prominently featured the court case. Lifetime created a television movie inspired by the case and Oscar-winner Sofia Coppola has filmed a movie based on the burglaries and their fallout.

Coppola's film was aided by the lead investigator on the case, Los Angeles police office Brett Goodkin, who failed to disclose his paid work and appearance in the film. That became an issue in recent months and prompted Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler to call Goodkin's actions "stupid" and a gift to defense attorneys, but not egregious enough to warrant an outright dismissal of the charges against Ames and two other defendants.

Schwartz said he would have attacked Goodkin's credibility and his claims that Ames had confessed, if the case had gone to trial, although he acknowledged that if Ames had been convicted of any charges she likely would have faced stiffer penalties.

Had the case against the trio gone to trial, jurors would have heard directly from one of the group's ringleaders, Nicholas Frank Prugo. The 21-year-old pleaded no contest in March to burglarizing the homes of Lohan and reality star Audrina Patridge and is scheduled be sentenced to two years in prison in in January.

Another accused ringleader, Rachel Lee, pleaded no contest to burglarizing Patridge's home and is serving a four year state prison sentence.

A Louis Vuitton bag full of jewelry was returned to Hilton after several members of the group were arrested, but much of the stolen property hasn't been recovered.
