Why employee engagement is good for business | Dynamic ...

Here is a startling figure for you: The cost to the Australian Economy of employees who are not ?engaged? by their work or employer is estimated to be $42.1 billion a year. To put that into perspective, that is the equivalent of 20.8 times the most recent Trade Deficit of Australia (August 2012).?

This is pretty staggering isn?t it? What it goes to show is that staff are the linchpin to most, if not all, businesses. If they are unhappy and doing a bad job, they could be potentially affecting your business profits. After all, your staff design your products, sell them, interact with your clients and above all, represent your brand. On the other hand, if they do a good job, your business thrives.

It is no surprise then, that some of the most successful businesses work to look after their employees. Just look at the 2012 ?Best places to work? and you will see successful brands such as Google, Salesforce, Diageo and RedBalloon all listed. Indeed,if you go back through previous years, businesses which consistently rank as good employers, seem to be businesses which continue to do well in business.? So what is their secret

Common elements of great places to work

Whether you read research papers, or just listen to the experiences of employees who are really happy with their jobs (white or blue collar), the answers are pretty much consistent and the same. Employee engagement is the key to creating a workplace that employees perform well in. Research has found that employees were most engaged and happy when:

  • ?I always know what I need to do when I show up.?
  • ?My manager lets me handle some situations my way, but the ultimate outcomes I am to achieve are clear between me and her?
  • ?Working in a company where my talents, knowledge and skill are understood, put to good use and respected.?

The research found that open two-way communication was pivotal to high levels of employee engagement. Furthermore, a good place to work is one where employees feel involved, that they have freedoms, clear directions and where the culture encourages them to bond with their workmates.

When these elements exist in a business, evidence suggests that employees are more cooperative, more helpful with colleagues, more punctual, more likely to turn up to work (not take sick days) and stay with the company longer. Contrast this with disengaged employees who are more likely to sabotage the business; look for ways to do less work, not turn up to work, or actively stymie business profits.

How to engage your employees

Chances are, you already know who your best employees are. Step back from the business and work out what makes them such valuable assets in your team. Is it the fact that they are a manager and have more visibility over the day-to-day? Or do you communicate with them more because you naturally get on and thus they feel like an important part of the team? Whatever it is, try to isolate common elements and then work out what you can do to infuse that into your workplace for all.

As identified above, communication is important in successful and happy businesses, so take steps to engage your workforce. This can be done through methods such as daily catch ups which allow you and your staff to know what is expected of them, the use of online project boards if they work in different locations, conducting annual away days to develop business strategy, or implementing systems which encourage you and your staff to interact in more meaningful ways.

What you need to remember is that with some adjustment, each of these approaches can work for businesses with multiple site locations, for businesses with either full time staff or shift workers and part time staff and in small or large businesses.

Technology can help

Fortunately, due to advances in technology, our methods of communication, and of organising our lives are made easier. For example if you are looking for a tool which can help streamline communications and marketing efforts to your clients, then there are tools like Salesforce or Marketo. Or if you need a way to hire casual staff simply and cheaply and without fuss, then you may use Oneshift. And if you are looking for a way to create shift rosters,? collate time sheet information to export to payroll, communicate with staff what you expect of them each shift, or need to share information with everyone at once, then you may sign up with Deputy, a solution designed to streamline business operations and engage everyone within the company.

Whatever you need, chances are solutions exist to help you. And if you are not sure where to find them, ask your staff, they perhaps, may have a solution you are looking for.

Millenium Films signs Darryl Marshak to first-look deal

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Millenium Films has signed long-time agent and manager Darryl Marshak to a two-year first-look production deal, the company announced on Wednesday.

Marshak is a founder of the Marshak Zachary Co, a management and production shop that is currently working on a film adaptation of "Moving Violations: War Zones, Wheelchairs and Declarations of Independence," a memoir by Emmy Award-winner John Hockenberry.

Prior to Marshak Zachary, Marshak created the Gold Marshak Liedtke Agency, where he helped launch the careers of actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio and James Franco.

That is also where Marshak met many of Millenium's top executives, including Boaz Davidson, head of development and creative affairs.

"When we started the company 20 or more years ago, we worked with Darryl all the time using his talent so we developed a friendship and he became part of the family," Davidson told TheWrap. "Later on he'd bring us material, which was usually very good."

"It's just natural that now that he's producing that we work together."

Davidson said he was particularly drawn to "Moving Violations," which Michael Maren is adapting and Alfred Sapse is producing. Davidson, who praised the book, described it as a "humane triumph."

The drama would stand out at Millenium, an independent studio best known for action films and thrillers, such as "The Expendables 2."

"He knows us," Davidson said. "This kind of movie is not one of the movies we do every day. Darryl knows that and he'll start feeding us stuff that is more our kind of movie. We trust him and we trust his taste." Marshak is at work on a number of projects at the moment, including serving as a producer on "Let It Be," a cinematic retelling of the 1971 Ping Pong Diplomacy incident that helped spur detente between the United States and China.

Bullet in chest doesn't keep cop from catching suspect

By Shimon Prokupecz and Brynn Gingras, NBCNewYork.com

An off-duty NYPD officer chased after a trio of robbery suspects in the Bronx, N.Y., after he was shot in the chest by one of them, authorities say. The officer then fatally shot one of the suspects.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Officer Ivan Marcano, 27, was sitting in the passenger seat of his car on Harrison Avenue around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday when his girlfriend saw two men robbing a third.

She told Marcano, who got out of the car, pulled out his gun and shield and identified himself as a police officer, Kelly said.

"As soon as he did, one of the suspects fired, striking Officer Marcano in the chest,'' Kelly said Wednesday evening at a news conference with Mayor Michael Bloomberg at the Bronx hospital where the officer was taken.

Read the original report??| ?More from NBCPhiladelphia.com

The wounded Marcano got back into the vehicle with his girlfriend behind the wheel. She took off to seek medical attention when their car became held up at a red light behind several vehicles, Kelly said. She honked at the cars; the one in front of her, a white Mustang, turned out to be the suspects' getaway vehicle. It jerked forward, hitting a livery cab and then a parked car before going onto the sidewalk where it came to a stop.

'Remarkable display of marksmanship'
Three men got out of the Mustang and started running on foot.?Marcano got out of his car, taking cover some distance away. Holding his left hand over his wound, with his gun in his right hand, he approached the men and fired one shot, Kelly said.

He then moved to another location and fired again.

"In a remarkable display of marksmanship and cool under fire, Officer Marcano fired, striking one of the suspects in the head,'' Kelly said.

The man died at the scene. The other men ran off in different directions.

Marcano followed one of the men, and came across an ambulance, which got him to Bronx Lebanon Hospital, Kelly said.?

A gun was recovered at the scene.

"There's police standing on every corner, all day and every day," said neighbor Crystal Lopez. "So for something like this to happen in police presence is scary."?

The group COP SHOT has posted a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrests and convictions of the two suspects on the loose.

Marcano, who joined the force in 2007 and was assigned to Transit District 12, is expected to be alright.?

He is the 12th NYPD officer to be shot in eight separate incidents so far this year, according to Kelly, and the second shooting of a police officer this week. On Tuesday, Nassau County Officer?Arthur Lopez was killed?after getting shot in what had started out as a traffic stop near the Belmont Park racetrack.

Tamera Mowry Speaks on Sex Before Marriage ? AMARIE ADHIS

So much has been said about whether or not to remain celibate before marriage. Times have changed, people?s views have changed, and even social standards for relationships have changed. Through it all, some people prefer to hold fast to tradition and keep sex within the marital institution. I think it?s remarkably difficult, but as some have proven, it?s something that can be done.

Ebony Magazine recently caught up with newlywed Tamera Mowry?Housley and it looks as though she is quite passionate about ?no sex before?marriage?. She? revealed to the publication that she was? abstinent before she got married to Fox News Anchor Adam Housley and she? does not believe a couple should live together before marriage.

EBONY: Tamera you mentioned in an interview that you and [your husband, Fox News Correspondent] Adam [Housley] not only didn?t live together, you also remained celibate until you married last year. Why did you choose that route and do you have any advice for your fans who are trying to follow in your footsteps in that regard?

TAMERA: Adam and I took a break from dating for about a year. We missed each other and something was drawing us together, but more than that, we wanted to make sure that this relationship was what God wanted for our lives.? [In order to know] if we are meant to be together, we said, ?it?s got to be God?s way and not our way.? We didn?t want to half-step anything [or have clouded judgment]. So our right way was the way we felt God wanted us to do it which was being celibate. We said to God, ?This is who we are, I know you take us as we are, our faults, our fears, our joys, our hope as a couple and have your way.?

I tried the ?missionary dating? [in the past] where you have a person with a great heart who you think is perfect and wonderful except for this one important area that you try to change. That?s unfair to that person. That person needs to be who they are 100%. And it?s unfair to you. You don?t want to drag somebody to church with you. My husband wakes up on Sundays and says ?Hey, are we going to church today?? It just makes [waiting] all worthwhile. I dated guys who did not share those same beliefs and it was hard. There were many nights of heartbreak and crying, and that?s not what God wants for us.

But if you want to be celibate, definitely don?t live together [laughs] because that makes it harder for you. Have people around you to keep you accountable! Surround yourself with people who support your decision, because they?re only going to root you on. Make that covenant with God and with each other and just let go. God is going to see you through the difficult times. Whenever you?re feeling discouraged just pray together. Like I said it?s not going to be a perfect journey, but you just have to keep God the center of your relationship.

Before Meagan Good tied the knot with her Sony Pictures Executive husband? DeVon Franklin, she was very open about their devout Christian faith and how?they both had decided to remain celibate until they got married. What many don?t? know though, is exactly how long DeVon had actually been celibate for.?Earlier this month? in an interview with Global Grind, he recently revealed that he was able to? abstain from having sex for over 10 years! Now, that?s what you call? discipline!

She was celibate before we got together and I was celibate. You?re not going? to believe me. Let me just put it this way, [I've been celibate] over ten? years.? Part of what I also do is preach and the thing that I couldn?t do,? which was eating me apart? What was happening with? me is that I would go and preach one thing but I was going and living another? and I could not do it. I could not look at myself in the mirror. I was like, ?No, I cannot live like this,? so I had to stop and say, ?You know what, until I? get married, that?s off the table.

Before their wedding, Meagan and DeVon chatted to Sister 2 Sister Magazine about their engagement, as? well as the reports that they will not be having sex with each other until their wedding night.? Devon expressed that? he hoped their union would be an inspiration to other couples, while Meagan said? that removing the physical and intimacy from the relationship gave them a chance to really get to know each? other and what they were getting into.

Devon: We want our marriage to be one of truth, one of love,? and hopefully model God?s love. In reality we?re not perfect. But we are? striving to live a life of Christ. We are striving to be an example of what his? life looks like on this earth, and hopefully through our union people will be? inspired, people will see themselves in us.

Meagan: The relationship is completely different. When you know somebody and you know their heart, it?s not? even a question about the physical part of it that comes into play completely later on. You really just get a? chance to understand what you?re getting. You don?t just want to be with this? person on Friday night, but Saturday afternoon too. That?s just icing on the? cake.

Back in 2010,?Necole Bitchie spoke to Lance Gross?and he had?a different view when it came to ?living together before marriage?:

Necole Bitchie:: I don?t know if I?d move in with a guy? before the ring. It?s like ?Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free??

Lance Gross: I?m not going to put a ring on your finger?until I live with you. I have to know you inside and out. So it?s not going to? work if you got that mindset?

Necole Bitchie:: Lebron James lives with his kids? mother? and he once said, ?If she?s living with me, she?s my wife? [but he hasn't bought? the ring].

Lance Gross: You can definitely get it twisted. If she?s? cooking for you, cleaning up after you and doing your laundry, that?s a role of? the wife. It?s the woman?s job to hold out on certain things and save something? for the marriage. You can give little hints of it but you can?t do it all? because a man will get comfortable. Don?t take on the role of a wife unless you? are married. As a man, why take the vows if you already got it?

I really am conflicted about this one. Sex is a really HUUUUGE part of any relationship and not just for the men. Women rank it quite high in their list of priorities as well. When I was in pre-marital counselling, sex was cited as?one of the causes of conflict or divorce in marriage. Life would be so much simpler if there was a blood test for sexual compatibility. Unfortunately there isn?t. The only way to tell if you are sexually compatible is to?..well, have sex! So what happens if, after marriage, you find out that he or she doesn?t quite do it for ya? Let me tell you what happens. You?ll be stuck. Society does not look too kindly on people who divorce their spouses ?just because the sex sucks.? So you?ll be one very stuck and very unhappy person in your very short life.

Also, I hate it when people start putting rules or boundaries in their relationships. When it comes to love and romance, I like to be adventurous. That?s why they call love a rollercoaster. You?re meant to go with the flow. Don?t limit yourself. When it feels right to have sex, don?t stop yourself because of some rule you think you should follow. Do it because it feels right or don?t do it because it doesn?t feel right. It?s similar to the woman who won?t date a man who does not open car doors for her. While you?re waiting for him to open doors, you might be missing out on something else very amazing about him.

And then we come to the inevitable question: What happens to those who are not?going to get married, or even legally can?t get married? The instruction to wait forever to experience a fundamental human pleasure is pointless and cruel. If you can go celibate, then do it. Just let it be about more than just celibacy. Make it mean something.

Most adults will have a great many important relationships in their lives ? some of those relationships will be romantic, and some of those will be sexual. That?s a good thing: our relationships with other people, sexual or not, are how we grow, evolve and learn about ourselves. They?re how we figure out what love is, what we like physically and emotionally, and how to negotiate our own needs with someone else?s. Despite the claims of the wait-till-marriage camp, waiting to have sex won?t protect you from heartache, frustration or love lost. But a variety of fulfilling relationships, sexual and not, will make you a more well-rounded, compassionate and self-assured person.

What are your thoughts on celibacy?

Time Out names the Delaunay best new London restaurant in 2012

Jeremy King and Chris Corbin

Rex Restaurant Associates' Delaunay has been named London's best new restaurant in the Time Out Eating & Drinking Awards 2013.

Jeremy King and Chris Corbin's restaurant in Aldwych, which is inspired by the Grand Caf?s of Europe, marked the start of the duo's expansion, which has since also seen the opening of Brasserie Z?del and Colbert.

The Delaunay beat stiff competition to win the title of best new restaurant, including Dabbous, Bistro Union and sister venue Brasserie Z?del.

Meanwhile Mark Hix's Tramshed in Shoreditch, which serves a limited menu of chicken and steak, was named Time Out's best new meat restaurant, with Virgilio Martinez's fine dining Peruvian restaurant Lima winning the inaugural best new Latin American restaurant award.

Time Out's food and drink editor Guy Dimond said that despite the tough economic climate 2012 had been a great year for going out in London as operators are embracing new trends. "London's hospitality industry seems to be laughing in the face of recession," he said.

"Restaurateurs have adapted to changed circumstances by creating no-bookings restaurants, which have faster turnover; with a trend for simpler restaurant food, exemplified by the explosion of meat and barbecue joints; and by embracing more casual drinking venues but with no compromise on the thrill of the drinks offered, which you find in the new craft beer bars."

Ahead of the Bell: Facebook to report 3Q results

NEW YORK (AP) ? In Facebook's second quarter as a publicly traded company, the world's largest social media site is juggling the challenge of growing its advertising revenue while maintaining the loyalty of more than 1 billion users.

Facebook is expected to report earnings of 11 cents per share on revenue of $1.23 billion after the market closes Tuesday, according to FactSet. The Menlo Park, Calif., company has not provided investors with any financial guidance.

Susquehanna analyst Herman Leung says that the company's progress in boosting mobile advertising will be the focus Tuesday. Facebook has only recently started showing ads, which it calls "sponsored stories," on mobile devices. The challenge with small screens is showing the ads without annoying users.

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said several new or modified products will likely boost revenue growth. Besides the mobile ads, these include the Facebook Exchange, which lets advertisers target users in real-time, based on outside websites they visit.

Challenges for Facebook include the declining fortunes of online game maker Zynga Inc., which accounts for as much as 12 percent of Facebook's total revenue. And last week, a disappointing quarter from Google Inc. dragged Facebook's stock lower with it. Google's ad revenue grew at the slowest pace in three years and some have begun to expect the same from Facebook.

Shares of Facebook Inc. closed at $19.32 on Monday, down 49 percent from its initial public offering price of $38.

200 years of American Indian persistence turned US into 'Indian Country'

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Frederick Hoxie starts each of his courses asking students to list three American Indians, and their answers are almost always the same: Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull and Geronimo.

All defeated warrior chiefs. All in the distant past.

And all in keeping with Americans' historic tendency to see Indians mostly as "brave, exotic and dead," says Hoxie, a Swanlund professor of history, law and American Indian studies at the University of Illinois.

There's a different list that Hoxie wants us to know about, filled with American Indian lawyers, lobbyists, writers, politicians and activists. Through their stories, Hoxie aims in a new book to tell how American Indians over two centuries persisted in claiming their rights in a country that once thought them irrelevant.

The history he tells in "This Indian Country: American Indian Activists and the Place They Made," is one where Indians are not just victims and in the past, but "fellow participants in the American story," up to the present.

Through their efforts, American Indians are now accepted as part of society in the U.S. and with rights to self-government and to their cultural traditions, Hoxie said. That's something the nation's founders never envisioned, and a contentious subject until later in the 20th century. It is also a distinct American Indian achievement, he said.

"There are so many stories of American Indians who were inventive, were creative, who didn't surrender, but who did something other than die on a battlefield," Hoxie said. Their fights instead were in legislatures and courtrooms, and in the court of public opinion.

Hoxie knew about them from his years of teaching and research, but didn't realize how fully they connected until doing research for "This Indian Country," being published later this month as part of the Penguin History of American Life Series.

He found "networks of connection" through which ideas, strategies and an insistence on American Indian rights were passed from generation to generation.

Among Hoxie's subjects is James McDonald, a Choctaw who was the first American Indian lawyer. When it became clear in the 1820s that the U.S. government was determined to remove the Choctaws and other tribes from the southeastern states, McDonald pointed out the contradiction between these actions and Americans' democratic ideals, Hoxie said.

McDonald was the first to make the case for American Indians' rights directly to political leaders and to seek recognition of those rights in a formal agreement, Hoxie said.

Another Hoxie subject is William Potter Ross, a Cherokee who, later in the century, worked to develop unity among the tribes and to hold the U.S. government to its treaty commitments. Ross sought recognition for American Indian governments within the American nation state, something that was not accomplished until the mid-20th century.

Into the 20th century, Thomas Sloan, another lawyer and an Omaha, made the case for tribes retaining their autonomy, while individual American Indians still retained their American citizenship. He was the first American Indian lawyer to argue a case before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Late in the 20th century, Vine Deloria Jr., a writer and activist, would challenge long-standing notions about American Indians' backwardness, further the cause of their rights and mentor many others who pressed their case in a variety of modern venues.

Hoxie's history of activism, which includes other figures, is one of many setbacks and small victories. It culminates, however, in a moment at the end of the 20th century when American Indians have been accepted as "a permanent part of the American scene," Hoxie said, even if many problems remain.

Similar to the story of other rights movements, "this is an American story," he said.

"It's a story about people who had been dispossessed, but who used the American political system to protect and to promote their communities. It's about how people have overcome barriers of politics and race and a whole range of things to accomplish the goal of living as equals in the United States."

200 years of American Indian persistence turned US into 'Indian Country' [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 22-Oct-2012

HBT: Tigers favored over Giants in World Series

San Francisco won six more games than Detroit during the regular season, but the Tigers are sizable favorites over the Giants in the World Series.

Bovada has Detroit as -180 favorites, which means you?d have to risk $180 to win $100 on the Tigers and means they?d have to win the series 65 percent of the time for that bet to be profitable.

Fresh off a dominant sweep of the Yankees and with a fully rested Justin Verlander matched up against Barry Zito in Game 1 it?s definitely not surprising that the Tigers are favored?Lance Berkman agrees, for instance?but -180 is maybe a little surprising considering the Giants have homefield advantage.

I?ll keep an eye on the betting line to see if it moves strongly one way or another before the first pitch tomorrow night.

My purifiers helped with my asthma

As an asthmatic, I?m not the most fun person to be around. I can?t stand dusty places, I avoid trees during springtime, I rarely touch dogs, I hate cats, not to mention that I run away from tobacco smoke. In my home I have four ionic air purifiers that take care of any unwanted particle that might cause a problem for me. I used to have only one, but it wasn?t enough, since I have a big house. I highly recommend ionic purifiers to anyone who suffers from asthma or who simply want to breathe clean air in their own house.

Americans will feel paycheck pinch as payroll tax break ends in ...

"I think there's a growing consensus that Congress and the president can't continue to divert such a critical revenue stream from Social Security."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama isn't talking about it and neither is Mitt Romney. But come January, 163 million workers can expect to feel the pinch of a big tax increase regardless of who wins the election.

A temporary reduction in Social Security payroll taxes is due to expire at the end of the year and hardly anyone in Washington is pushing to extend it. Neither Obama nor Romney has proposed an extension, and it probably wouldn't get through Congress anyway, with lawmakers in both parties down on the idea.

Even Republicans who have sworn off tax increases have little appetite to prevent one that will cost a typical worker about $1,000 a year, and two-earner family with six-figure incomes as much as $4,500.

Why are so many politicians sour on continuing the payroll tax break?

Republicans question whether reducing the tax two years ago has done much to stimulate the sluggish economy. Politicians from both parties say they are concerned that it threatens the independent revenue stream that funds Social Security.

They are backed by powerful advocates for seniors, including AARP, who adamantly oppose any extension.

"The payroll tax holiday was intended to be temporary and there is strong bipartisan support to let that tax provision expire," said Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee. "The continued extension of a temporary payroll tax holiday has serious long-term implications for Social Security and, frankly, it's not even clear that it has helped to boost our ailing economy."

The question of renewing the payroll tax cut has been overshadowed by the expiration of a much bigger package of tax cuts first enacted under President George W. Bush. The Bush-era tax cuts also expire at the end of the year, and Congress is expected to try to address them after the election, in a lame-duck session.

The payroll tax cut could become part of the mix in negotiations that could go in many directions. But lawmakers in both political parties say they doubt it.

"I think there's a growing consensus that Congress and the president can't continue to divert such a critical revenue stream from Social Security," said Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas, a senior Republican on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee. "I think more and more Americans understand that that payroll tax cut, while politically appealing, is endangering Social Security."

Before he was named as Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., disparaged the payroll tax cut, calling it "sugar-high economics" that wouldn't promote long-term growth.

Social Security is funded by a 12.4 percent tax on wages up to $110,100, rising to $113,700 in 2013. Half is paid by employers and the other half is paid by workers. For 2011 and 2012, Congress and Obama cut the share paid by workers from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent.

A worker making $50,000 saved $1,000 a year, or a little more than $19 a week. A worker making $100,000 saved $2,000 a year.

The beauty of the tax cut is that is shows up in weekly paychecks, giving workers more money to spend or save. The downside is that some workers might not notice a $19-a-week increase in pay, making them unlikely to credit the politicians who made it happen.

Under the law, Congress is reimbursing Social Security for the lost revenue, estimated at $103 billion in 2011 and $112 billion in 2012. But Congress didn't cut spending or raise other taxes to offset the lost revenue, so the payroll tax cut is being financed with borrowed money, adding to the national debt.

Democrats are more willing to defend the tax cut, saying it helped prop up the economy during a rough stretch while providing what amounted to a 2 percent pay increase to millions of middle-income workers. But they, too, are concerned about maintaining Social Security's source of revenue.

"I think people realize that was a temporary thing," said Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska.

Rep. Richard Neal of Massachusetts, a senior Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee, said he thinks there is evidence that the tax cut helped the economy. But, he added, "I'm not sure that it met expectations."

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California said she, too, wants to let the tax cut expire.

Larry Summers, Obama's former economic adviser, is a lonely voice in Washington calling to extend the payroll tax cut. He said in a recent speech that the economy is too fragile to reduce workers' incomes.

Obama pushed for the tax cut in late 2010 as a way to increase workers' take-home pay to help boost consumer spending and provide a spark for the economy. Economists were divided on the economic benefits. Many said it probably helped increase consumer spending but there was no consensus on the magnitude.

The initial tax cut was for only a year, and many Republicans in Congress wanted to let it lapse at the end of 2011. But Obama and Democratic lawmakers successfully fought to extend it through 2012.

Obama, however, didn't include the tax cut in his 2013 budget proposal, and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told Congress this year that he saw no reason to extend it again.

White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage wouldn't rule out an extension but wouldn't commit to one, either.

"The president fought extremely hard last year in the face of Republican opposition to ensure that the payroll tax cut was extended," Brundage said. "There are a number of tax issues that Congress will have to deal with at the end of the year, this being one of them, and we will continue to evaluate all of the options available to us at that time."

Romney's campaign hammers Obama almost every day for proposing to let Bush-era tax cuts expire for individuals making more than $200,000 and married couples making more than $250,000. But Romney's tax plan would let the payroll tax cut expire, an issue he doesn't mention on the stump.

Romney's campaign declined to discuss the issue.

Workout warrior Chris Wong fighting cancer with help of new drug

Chris Wong is a workout warrior.

So when he developed pain in his lower back and left leg early in 2009 he assumed he?d pulled a muscle or pinched a nerve. But the pain kept getting worse.

?I was moaning with pain in the evenings and had great difficulty just getting around,? Wong, now 46, wrote in an account of his battle with what turned out to be anaplastic large cell lymphoma, a very aggressive form of cancer. He got that diagnosis after he finally went to the Baptist Medical Center emergency room on Memorial Day 2009.

By then, the cancer, which had progressed over the course of three months to stage-4, had begun to eat into his skeletal structure. His left femur had deteriorated so severely that he had to undergo surgery to have a titanium rod inserted into the bone.

While Wong was recovering from the surgery, he was visited by oncologist Augusto Villegas who told Wong his cancer was treatable but had a high degree of recurrence.

?It was crushing news,? Wong wrote.

In the next two years, Villegas would treat Wong with two rounds of chemotherapy. The first round of chemotherapy put the cancer in remission in October 2009. Wong then underwent a transplant of some of his own stem cells, which had been harvested and stored, at Shands at the University of Florida.

But in February 2011, following the surgical removal of bumps on his head that Wong had initially thought was acne, a biopsy revealed the lymphoma had returned.

?To have the cancer on my skin caught me completely by surprise,? Wong wrote. ?I was pretty shook-up by this devastating news, but received comfort from my family and friends.?

That was treated with radiation. But after Wong continued to lose weight and suffer chest pain, Villegas ordered a bone scan in early June.

The scan found that the cancer had begun to eat into Wong?s rib and pelvis bones. Starting in mid-June, he checked into Baptist Medical Center every four weeks for five days of inpatient chemotherapy treatments.

A PET scan in late July seemed to indicate the cancer was again in remission.

But Villegas was concerned that the lymphoma might return again. ?Typically, it?s harder to cure non-Hodgkins lymphoma after relapse,? he said. ?Chris is a young guy, healthy as a horse. We needed to do something.?

That something, Villegas thought, might be a new drug just approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Adcetris, unlike most other forms of chemotherapy, targets only the cancer cells while leaving the healthy cells unharmed, Villegas said.

Villegas, who practices with Cancer Specialists of North Florida, called Adcetris ?a smarter way to treat cancer? and said it was designed specifically to be used on patients with anaplastic lymphoma after they have relapsed.

?This drug has a very, very specific niche,? he said.

?I was so relieved to have an alternate treatment approach,? Wong wrote. ?This was much better than dosing my whole body with chemo treatments for 4-5 days.?

In early October of last year, Wong began going to Villegas?s office every three or four weeks for an infusion of Adcetris. Last Nov. 19, a PET-CT scan showed him cancer free.

Then in December, he went to Shands at the University of Florida where he received a stem cell transplant from a donor.

He was allowed to resume his work as an IT coordinator for a health care company in May, working from home. Then in July, he was allowed to return to his office. On his last scan, in August, Wong remained cancer-free.

?I?m enjoying life,? the father of four said during an interview. ?It?s a lot to go through. But it gives you a better appreciation of life.?

And he?s still a workout warrior.

To reset the time on your watch, first remove the watch and gently pull out the crown and set the hands to the correct time. To adjust the date pull out the crown to the first notch and turn until you reach the required date. If you miss the required date you will have to keep going until it comes round again as most watches only advance forwards, so take it slowly. If possible do not change the date between 10pm and 2am as the date changing mechanisms in your watch operate between these times.4. When not being worn your watch should be stored in a dry environment away from direct heat and dust sources. Do not rest your mechanical watch on the crown or push pieces when you put it down as this can cause damage. Purpose built watch boxes which can be seen at Chronolux.com make the perfect gift for the watch enthusiast as they store multiple pieces safely. Watch winders are a great storage solution for automatic watches. They contain a rotating mechanism the movement of which mimics that of the wrist to keep the watch working. If you want to buy a mechanical watch or just want to know more about the watch you wear then see the ?Resource? section.
