Of all the speakers I have heard based on Apple’s Airplay technology, the Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air sounds the best. It has a presence and detail unmatched in other speakers. Heart rate monitoring - Wellness and Fitness

garmin 405 heart rate monitorToo many people fail to reap the benefits of an aerobic fitness program because they are exercising for too short a time and without enough vigor. Remember, 20 minutes of continuous activity is good. 30 minutes is better. 40 minutes is best.

In order to obtain a training effect you?re going to have to exercise at a level where your heart rate is at least over 65% of your maximum heart rate (MHR). 70% is better and, as you get fitter 80% is achievable. As time goes on you?ll find that you?re able to train at increasingly higher heart rate levels for longer periods of time. But as I?ve said, you don?t need to belt yourself up during every session.

Vary the intensity of your sessions. Maximum heart rate is said to be 220 minus your age, so if you?re a 40 year old work on a maximum heart rate figure of 180. 65% of that is around 115 beats per minute (BPM) 70% around 125 BPM and 80% is a bit over 140 BPM. If you?re younger work at higher target heart rates.

I recommend you get a heart rate meter so you can keep track of your heart rate while you exercise. A basic level, heart rate meter is quite adequate.

As you get fitter you?ll notice that you can keep your heart rate at higher levels for longer periods of time. With the heart rate meter you?ll quickly learn how to monitor the intensity of your workout.

You?ll also notice that as you get fitter your heart rate comes down quicker after exercise than it did before. On top of that you?ll notice that it stays slightly elevated for quite a while after you?ve finished exercising, which is a bonus for people wanting to lose weight.

As a rule of thumb, it is probable that your resting pulse rate will decline as you become fitter.

The lowest resting pulse rate that I?ve heard of belongs to long distance cycling champion, Migual Indurain, timed at 26 beats per minute. As I understand it, Bjorn Borg?s was 28, Herb Elliott?s in the mid 30?s and Shane Gould?s 38.

AEROBIC FITNESS AND BLOOD PRESSURE

As you become aerobically fitter your resting blood pressure will come down, and for a high proportion of people with elevated blood pressure it will return to within the normal range. This is because the exercise is stimulating your elimination system and cooling down an over-stimulated sympathetic nervous system. If you think you?ve got to stay on blood pressure medication for the rest of your life, think again.

If you?re one of the people on the type of blood pressure tablet that prevents your heart rate from going up as you exercise, ask your medical practitioner to change your medication so you can reap the full benefits of a vigorous aerobic training program.

In a nutshell. Get a heart rate monitor and do the exercise job properly.

How the Brain Views Race

race, how the brain views race, liz phelps Liz Phelps was one of the first researchers to tackle how the brain responds to people of different racial groups. Image: NYU

From Nature magazine

How the brain responds to and processes images of people from different racial groups is an emerging field of investigation that could have major implications for society. Psychologist Elizabeth Phelps of New York University, in New York, who in 2000 led one of the first studies in this area, tells Nature what her latest review of the field reveals about the neuroscience of race.

What does psychology tell us about race?
Social psychologists differentiate between the attitudes that people express and their implicit preferences. This can be studied using the implicit association task, which measures initial, evaluative responses. It involves asking people to pair concepts such as black and white with concepts like good and bad. What you find is that most white Americans take longer to make a response that pairs black with good and white with bad than vice versa. This reveals their implicit preferences.

What did your review of the neuroscience literature show?
My colleagues and I found that there?s a network of brain regions that is consistently activated in neuroimaging studies of race processing. This network overlaps with the circuits involved in decision-making and emotion regulation, and includes the amygdala, fusiform face area (FFA), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC).

What did your previous work show?
Our 2000 study was the first to link race preference to brain activity. We measured the eye-blink startle, a reflex response that people display when they hear a loud noise, for example. A lot of studies have shown that this reflex is potentiated [enhanced] when people are anxious or in the presence of something they think is negative. We found that implicit preferences were correlated with potentiated startle, and that both were correlated with the amount of amygdala activation.

How does the neuroscience fit with the psychological model?
Activity in the FFA isn?t surprising, because all of these studies use photos of faces. The amygdala is involved in emotions, and might be linked to the automatic evaluations we make when we see people from other racial groups. We think that the ACC and DLPFC are involved in more complex functions. People tend to show unintentional indications of race bias, even when they are motivated to be non-prejudiced, so the ACC may be involved in detecting these conflicts. You can have an implicit bias and choose not to act on it, and the DLPFC may be trying to regulate the emotional responses that conflict with our egalitarian goals and beliefs.

What about people who are overtly prejudiced?
Finding differences in people with extreme views wouldn?t be too surprising, but I?m not sure we?d see anything more than an exaggerated [emotional] response. We?re more interested in ?normal? people. Those who are more internally motivated to be non-prejudiced show greater ACC activity, whereas those who hold extreme views obviously have explicit, intentional race bias and don?t care about controlling their emotional responses.

What are the societal implications of this research?
Most white Americans we studied show an implicit preference for their own group. They don?t have bad intentions, but because they?ve associated black people with, say, criminality so many times, their decisions are infused with that association, whether or not they believe it?s accurate. There?s evidence of unintentional race bias at every stage of the legal process. Despite the fact that it aims to be egalitarian, sentencing is vastly different for African Americans. The bias is also there in employment.

How should this research progress?
We need to investigate how our implicit preferences are linked to the choices and decisions we make. We want to use this knowledge to reduce the unintended consequences of race bias ? the things we do that aren?t consistent with our beliefs. One problem is the lack of funding for this type of work. It?s very hard to fund this kind of research because it?s not really relevant to health. One way to go would be to apply the sophisticated tools of neuroeconomics to investigate how unintentional bias affects our decision making. The research could also be linked to emerging work on controlling emotions.

Google's Andy Rubin: Nexus 7 may head to retail, but we're not changing tablet app policies

Google's Andy Rubin Nexus 7 may head to retail, but we're not changing tablet app policies

We've got good news and bad news in equal measure for those pining after a Nexus 7 of their very own. If you're reluctant to spend that much hard-earned cash at the Google Play Store, Google's senior VP of mobile Andy Rubin has hinted to AllThingsD that the ASUS-made tablet could end up at retail stores before too long; the Play-only availability was just what Google had to mention at I/O. There could be some markup in other channels, given that Google is selling at what's very nearly wholesale prices. The bad news? Google won't be changing its attitude towards tablet-native apps anytime soon. Rubin sees Google Play content additions as key to driving Android tablet adoption, not the encouragement of tablet-specific app development -- he'd prefer the one-size-fits-all model. We'll see whether magazines and movie sales are enough to turn around so-so market share, but if you were hoping Rubin would address criticisms that Android tablet apps are just blown-up phone apps, you'll have to keep waiting.

ITC: Google vs Apple preliminary win reviewed, iPhone and iPad ...

The Apple vs Android legal war is so complex that unless you follow it closely, you?re prone to get lost in translation and soon give up trying to keep up with who is suing who and why, and who?s scoring more wins and where.

Essentially, Apple sued the main players in the Android business so far including Samsung, Motorola and HTC for alleged patent infringement, but it didn?t go directly after Google. In turn, the three Android makers countersued Apple individually, bringing their own patents to the fight, and Google watched from the sidelines, deciding not to sue Apple directly ? it did try to provide some ammunition to HTC, but the patents it shared with the Taiwanese company were shot down in court recently.

[Update: One of our readers points out that Motorola sued Apple first, which is true. The company sued Apple in October 2010, but Apple sued Motorola back during the same month.]

Since Google completed its extraordinarily expensive $12.5 billion Motorola purchase?back in May, it found itself involved in a plethora of legal battles, with Apple but also with Microsoft.

When Google announced its plans to acquire Motorola last year, analysts and members of the media speculated on the fact that the Search giant is willing to pay $12.5 billion for the company in order to arm itself with a huge collection of patents, many of them essential for the cell phone business. At the time the purchase offer was made, the Apple vs Android legal war was raging on, so it seemed logical to see Motorola?s patents as important defensive and offensive weapons against Apple, and anyone else that would attack Android.

But now that Google has inherited all of Motorola?s legal predicaments, the Search giant is far from putting that impressive patent collection to good use. We?re certainly interested to see whether the conflict with Apple will further escalate, or whether the two companies will find a common ground in the near future and reach a settlement.

motorola razr vs apple iphone 4s

Meanwhile, Apple and Google are basically suing each other in various courts, both in the U.S. and in Europe, and this fight may become one of the most important battles yet in the mobile environment now that Google is directly involved.

Earlier this week, a Federal Judge decided to dismiss an Apple case against Motorola (and therefore Google) with prejudice, meaning that neither party can refile the suit in a Federal court. Both companies asked for an injunction against the other?s products, with Apple having four patents left in the fight against one of Motorola?s. At the time, Judge Posner revealed his opposition to awarding injunctions to any company based on FRAND patents, or standards-essential patents. And that Motorola patent used in the trial is a FRAND patent.

Why is this important to know? Well, Motorola scored a victory against Apple back in April at the International Trade Commission before being purchased by Google. Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) Thomas Pender found in his initial determination that Apple was infringing a 3G patent owned by Motorola. The patent, one of the four Motorola attacked with in this complaint with the ITC, targeted Apple?s iOS devices including the iPhone and the iPad. This patent is a FRAND patent as well, but not the same one Motorola used in Federal Court against Apple.

The ALJ?s initial finding was not a final decision, and the final ruling of the Commission can overturn it. In fact,?Bloomberg?on Monday reported that the ITC decided to review the ALJ?s initial determination and issue a final ruling on August 24.

Google And Motorola Ordered To Share Android Development Data With Apple

In theory, in case Google will win this battle, the ITC can award an import ban against iPhones and iPads, which would mean that Apple would not be able to bring the devices that are manufactured in China to the U.S. anymore. In case that sounds familiar, that?s what happened with HTC in one of its legal fights with Apple. The iPhone maker won an import ban with that ?data tapping? patent ? a patent it also uses against Motorola and Samsung in other suits. Also worth mentioning is that Apple and HTC are still arguing on the matter, as Apple claims that more HTC devices continue to infringe that patent, and therefore the product ban should cover 29 more devices including the HTC EVO 4G LTE and the HTC One X. That only goes to show how complicated these ITC trials are, and how product import bans affect the companies involved in these lawsuits.

But Google?s ITC complaint is slightly different as it?s based on a single patent, and that one is a standards-essential patent. Motorola is already investigated in the European Union for its FRAND patent use in such patent-based trials, right alongside Samsung, and it?s probably unlikely to see major injunctions and/or import bans on FRAND patents alone.

Moreover, various third parties formally voiced their support for Apple and Microsoft in their defending ITC cases against FRAND patents owned by Motorola including U.S. senators and Congressmen, the United States Federal Trade Commission, HP, Nokia, Intel, AT&T, Verizon, IBM, Activision Blizzard, Cisco and others.

With all that in mind, we can?t but wonder what the ITC ruling will be, but considering what?s at play and the fact that Google is only relying on one FRAND patent in this fight, an iPhone and iPad import ban seems highly unlikely. And, for the sake of the argument, the same goes for Microsoft products including the Xbox gaming console, which is targeted by Google in a different ITC case. But the two companies may end up licensing the technology from Google, or enter other settlements with the Search giant.

We?ll be back with more details about this ITC Google vs Apple case, as the two companies will have to answer to various questions from the Commission in the following months (see PDF file at the Source link below), many of them referring specifically to FRAND patents and whether they?re suitable for such import ban requests.

Moody's cuts debt ratings of 28 Spanish banks

Spain's battered banks have taken another hit, this time in the form of a sweeping downgrade by Moody's.

The rating agency said that it is cutting its views on the debt issued by 28 Spanish banks, including international heavyweights Banco Santander and Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria.

The Spanish government's fragile finances are making it more difficult for that country to support its lenders, according to Moody's. And it says the banks are vulnerable to further losses from Spain's real-estate bust.

The announcement late Monday from Moody's Investors Service came on the same day that Spain's government formally asked for help from its European neighbors in cleaning up its stricken banking sector. The request left many questions unanswered, including how much Spain would ask for out of the $125 billion loan package it has been offered.

That uncertainty over Spain led to losses Monday in global stock markets. Bond investors, meanwhile, pushed Spain's borrowing costs higher, a sign of wilting confidence in the country's ability to support its banks.

The downgrades reflect Moody's dimming view on the ability of the Spanish banks to repay their debts. Moody's said the lower ratings stemmed from its having downgraded the Spanish government's credit rating by three notches earlier this month.

A downgrade usually means that banks will have to pay more to service their debt. Investors demand higher interest for riskier debt implied by lower credit ratings.

Spain formally asked the European Union on Monday for rescue loans to help clean up its troubled banking industry. The Spanish economy, the fourth-largest of the 17 countries that use the euro currency, is suffering from the aftershocks of a real estate bust that has devastated families as well as banks. Unemployment is nearly 25 percent.

The Spanish government's financial fate is intertwined with that of the country's banks. Two-thirds of the government's bonds are owned by Spanish banks, pension funds and insurance companies.

Moody's long-term rating on Banco Santander SA, the eurozone's largest bank by market capitalization, remains in investment grade despite a two-notch downgrade. The rating agency cited Santander's diversified holdings that reduce its exposure to the government's finances. Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria SA's new long-term rating is one notch below Santander's and just one notch above non-investment, or "junk" status.

The debt of several others, however, is now considered junk. Those include Banco Popular Espanol, Bankinter SA and Bankia.

Moody's did say in a statement that the agency is encouraged by measures being taken by Spain to support its banks.

The rating agency's move came four days after the rating agency downgraded some of the world's biggest banks, including Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs, reflecting concern over their exposure to the violent swings in global financial markets. Moody's also cut the ratings on seven German and three Austrian banks this month.

The downgrades haven't come as a surprise. But they come at a time of great uncertainty in the global economy. Europe's 17-nation currency union is under threat, the U.S. economy is slowing and the economies of India, Brazil and China are cooling.

EU leaders are meeting Thursday and Friday in Brussels for another summit aimed at reining in Europe's debt crisis. Debt-wracked Greece is looking to renegotiate some of the budget-cutting measures it has agreed to in exchange for continued support from international lenders. The summit comes just a week after Greece's new coalition government was formed following months of political turmoil and two inconclusive elections.

Two international audits last week found that Spain could need as much as $77 billion. The government wants the loans to go directly to the banks so that it won't be responsible for repayment in case of a default. That idea has met with resistance.

The size and interest rates of the loans likely will be discussed at the EU summit this week.

Investors are concerned that beyond a rescue for its troubled banking sector, Spain itself may ultimately need a full country bailout like Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

Steep losses stung stock markets on both sides of the Atlantic Monday. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 138 points to close at 12,502.66, a loss of 1.1 percent. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index fell even more, 1.6 percent.

In Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 stock index fell 1.1 percent, France's CAC-40 slumped 2.2 percent, while Germany's DAX dropped 2.1 percent. The selling spilled over to Asian on Tuesday, with Nikkei 225 index fell 0.8 percent and South Korea's Kospi was 0.2 percent lower in early trading.

Many analysts believe big banks, including those in the U.S., would be the first to feel the hit of a freeze-up in Europe's financial system if Spain isn't able to convince bond markets that it can rescue its hobbled banks.

The uncertainty pushed borrowing costs higher for Spain's government on Monday. Its stock market plunged 3.7 percent.

The other 23 banks downgraded by Moody's are Caja Laboral, Banca March SA, Caja Rural de Navarra SCC, Caixa Bank, Instituto de Credito Oficial, Banco Cooperativo Espanol SA, Banco Sabadell SA, Kutxabank SA, Unicaja Banco SA, Banco Pastor SA, Confederacion Espanola de Cajas de Ahorro, Caja Rural de Granada SCC, Bankoa SA, Liberbank SA, Ibercaja Banco SA, Cajamar Caja Rural SCC, Ahorro Corporacion Financiera SV SA, Banco CEISS, Catalunya Banc SA, NCG Banco SA , Banco CAM, Dexia Sabadell SA and Banco de Valencia SA.

Meizu MX 4-core and Flyme OS 1.0 formally announced, available on June 30th

Meizu MX 4core

Forget that "MX Quad-core" moniker, because Meizu's just formally introduced its first quad-core Android phone as the "MX 4-core" in Hong Kong, an event jam-packed with balloons and local celebrities (we really should've brought our sunglasses). For those who care, this is the first time ever for Meizu to collaborate with a carrier -- that being Hong Kong's PCCW, who's offering the HK$3,099 (US$400) 32GB model for free on various tariffs, while details are light on the HK$4,099 (US$530) 64GB version. Once the stage cleared we had a chance to take a closer look at the international variant of the MX 4-core. Aside from the disappearance of the Chinese logo above the screen plus the duller logo on the back (but accompanied by an extra capacity label), the 4-inch HSPA+ phone looks identical to its dual-core sibling. Additionally, Hong Kong and mainland China customers who pre-order between now and the launch on June 30th will get to pick a colored back crystal shell for free, including ivory white, milky lime, lilac purple and misty pink to replace the original white.

Software-wise Flyme -- Meizu's heavily customized Ice Cream Sandwich -- is also very similar to its Gingerbread predecessor, except for its slicker responsiveness (especially the camera app) and the odd interface tweaks here and there. There are also a few new features that are worth a mention: on top of the new native stopwatch, countdown timer and multi-segmented timed task lists, there's Flyme Voicemail which is essentially a native recorder for incoming calls that you reject (think of it as a neat alternative to conventional visual voicemail), and there's Flyme Message which is Meizu's take on SIP services like Whatsapp and Line. We shall dig deeper in our full review, but for now, you can check out a quick hands-on video after the break. And for those who still possess Meizu's older Android phones, we were told to expect Flyme to be delivered over the air in early July (as opposed to the original June date), so keep an eye out for that little update icon.

Update: We mentioned in our video that the China version of the MX 4-core doesn't come with the Play Store, but it turns out that we were mistaken. Hooray!

Update 2: By the way, it's pronounced "fly-me."

?Make no mistake, we need to end an era in Washington where accountability?s been absent, oversight has been overlooked, your tax dollars have been turned over to wealthy CEOs in well-connected corporations. You need leadership you can trust to work for you. Not for the special interests who have had their thumb on the scales. And together we will tell Washington and their lobbyists that their days of setting the agenda are over. They have not funded my campaign. You have. They will not run my White House. All EP groups condemn Turkey's stance on Cyprus, House President says

The President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou has expressed his satisfaction over the fact that all delegations of the Political Groups of the European Parliament which visited Cyprus have condemned Turkey in an absolute and categorical manner for not recognizing the Republic of Cyprus and the Cyprus EU Presidency, due in the second half of 2012.

This is a significant political fact that should not be overlooked Omirou stated, following a meeting here today with a delegation of the EP Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE).

He further said that although the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU does not include the Cyprus problem in its agenda, it provides however a significant opportunity to underline Turkeys negative, anti-European stance.

The EU Presidency should be utilized to display this dimension of Turkeys approach and its European aspirations that are in contrast with its stance vis-a-vis the Republic of Cyprus, an EU member state, he said.

Omirou added that Turkey continues to occupy EU territory, while violating at the same time the acquis communautaire and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which is part of it. He added that Ankara also questions Cyprus sovereign rights within the Republics Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and threatens with war.

This side of Turkey should be exposed to our European counterparts, Omirou concluded.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. The two sides have been engaged in peace talks to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite the country, under a federal roof.

The Republic has signed an agreement to delineate the EEZ with Egypt and Israel with a view to exploit any possible natural gas and oil reserves in its EEZ. A similar agreement was signed with Lebanon but the Lebanese Parliament has not yet ratified it.

Ankara has threatened Cyprus when Nicosia launched last September its exploration activities within the Republics EEZ and announced earlier this year a second round of licensing for off-shore hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation activities.

The government of Cyprus has protested to the UN and the EU Turkeys moves, saying it has a sovereign right to exploit its natural resources.

Turkey blames Syria for jet attack, consults NATO

ANKARA/AMMAN (Reuters) - Turkey accused Syria on Sunday of shooting down a military reconnaissance jet in international airspace without warning and called a NATO meeting to discuss a response to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Amid growing acrimony between the once-friendly neighbors, Syria said its forces had shot dead "terrorists" infiltrating its territory from Turkey, which along with Western and Arab nations has backed the cause of Syrians fighting Assad.

Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the search for two missing pilots was still under way, in coordination with the Syrian authorities. He denied it was a "joint" operation.

He said the RF-4 Phantom jet had been clearly marked as Turkish and dismissed Syria's assertion it had not identified the aircraft before opening fire.

Davutoglu said he also planned to set out Turkey's case at the United Nations Security Council where Western powers are seeking, against Russian and Chinese opposition, to push through a motion that could allow stronger measures against Assad.

Moscow fears this might lead to military action that could undermine its interests in Syria.

What began as demonstrations against Assad developed last year into armed rebellion, tipping the country towards a sectarian civil war, with thousands already killed across Syria.

Syrian tanks and artillery shelled the eastern city of Deir al-Zor on Sunday, killing at least 20 people in the second day of bombardment in the oil-producing region, amid heavy fighting with anti-Assad insurgents, opposition activists said.

Davutoglu said the jet was unarmed and had been on a solo mission to test domestic radar systems, but acknowledged it had briefly crossed Syrian airspace 15 minutes before it was hit.

"Our plane was shot at a distance of 13 sea miles from Syria's border in international airspace," Davutoglu said.

"According to the radar images, our plane lost contact with headquarters after it was hit and because the pilot lost control, it crashed into Syrian waters after making abnormal movements," he said. "Throughout this entire period no warning was made to our plane."

Some analysts said the aircraft, in violating Syrian airspace at a time of great sensitivity, could in fact have been testing Syria's Russian-supplied radar and air defenses, which would be an obstacle to any possible Western armed action.

Turkey is prickly about its own airspace and that of north Cyprus, where Turkish troops are deployed. Only last month it scrambled jets to intercept an Israeli plane it said had violated northern Cypriot airspace and demanded an explanation.

The foreign ministry said Turkey knew the coordinates of its jet's wreckage, 1,300 meters underwater, but had not found it.

Syria, formally at war with Israel and the target of Israeli air raids in the past, has said the plane was flying fast and low, just one kilometer off its coast when it was shot down as an unidentified intruder. It was only later found to be Turkish.

"TERRORIST" INFILTRATORS

Turkey shelters the rebel Free Syria Army (FSA) and hosts 32,000 Syrian refugees on its southeastern border with Syria, some 50 km (30 miles) from where the Turkish aircraft was shot down. But it denies providing arms for the insurgents.

Syria's state news agency said Syrian forces had confronted "terrorists" who had crossed the Turkish border into the coastal province of Latakia and killed several of them on Sunday.

Syria and Turkey share a border 900 km (550 miles) long.

As if to underline its military reach, Turkey's military announced it had carried out air strikes against nine Kurdish militant targets in northern Iraq in the past three days.

Turkey has often bombed Kurdish fighters seeking more autonomy in southeast Turkey and has even sent ground forces across the border to attack their bases in Iraq.

Around 8,000 Syrian Kurdish refugees have crossed into Iraqi Kurdistan, fleeing the conflict at home, Masoud Barzani, president of the autonomous region, told a news conference.

Turkey's hostility to Assad has mounted steadily since the Syrian leader ignored its advice to enact democratic reform in response to protests that erupted 16 months ago as part of a wider Arab awakening, rather than violently suppressing them.

Assad's security state, dominated by his minority Alawite sect, is now embroiled in a bloody fight for survival against rebels mostly from Syria's Sunni Muslim majority.

NATO envoys will meet on Tuesday at Turkey's request under Article 4 of the military alliance's founding treaty, which provides for states to "consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the parties is threatened".

It stops short of the explicit mention of possible armed responses cited in Article 5.

Britain's foreign minister, William Hague, condemned Syria's downing of the Turkish jet as an "outrageous act" and said his country was ready to support robust action against Damascus by the United Nations Security Council.

SYRIA'S ALLIES

Russia and China have previously blocked any firm measures by the council, twice vetoing draft resolutions on Syria.

Moscow, which said on Sunday it had "no doubt" there were attempts at regime change in Syria, is one of Assad's main arms suppliers and a firm opponent of any outside intervention there. It says Western powers would invite an unpredictable spread of violence if they attempted any intervention in the country.

A ship carrying Russian helicopters to Syria, which turned back after its insurance was cut, is expected to resume its journey accompanied by at least one other vessel, Interfax reported, citing a military source.

Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi condemned the shooting down of the Turkish jet on an "inoffensive flight" as "a further extremely serious and unacceptable action by the Assad regime".

European Union foreign ministers will discuss the Syria crisis, as well as Iran and Egypt, in Luxembourg on Monday.

In a telephone conversation with Davutoglu, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, whose government is a staunch backer of Assad, said he hoped both sides would "settle the issue peacefully to maintain regional stability".

Iraq has described the incident as a serious escalation that demonstrated how Syria's conflict could spread beyond its frontiers and open up ethnic and other tensions in the region.

It remains unclear exactly what the Turkish jet had been doing - a reconnaissance mission to support Syrian rebels or to test Syria's air defenses are among the theories. Syrian anti-aircraft gunners may also have been jumpy after a defecting Syrian pilot flew his fighter to Jordan the previous day.

While the incident has aggravated tensions and exposed the risks of Syria's crisis spilling over its borders, neither Ankara nor Damascus seems likely to seek a military showdown.

"What all this tells us is that there are a lot of 'fishy' tactics and strategies going on in the region, with numerous players behind many curtains," said Hayat Alvi, lecturer in Middle Eastern studies at the U.S. Naval War College.

"Nonetheless, the idea that it would be in Turkey's and Syria's respective national interests to engage in military conflict with each other is not plausible. Both sides would have too much to lose and very little to gain."

One Idea from Rio+20: Investing in Green Infrastructure ? Donald ...

Twenty years ago, world leaders gathered in Rio de Janeiro to grapple with climate change, biological diversity, and other environmental challenges. Today they are back again, but with much less fanfare. If my Twitter feed is any indication, Rio+20 is getting much less attention that the original Earth Summit.

One item that deserves attention is greater emphasis on getting business involved in protecting the environment. For example, two dozen leading businesses?from Alcoa to Xerox?teamed up with The Nature Conservancy on a vision for The New Business Imperative: Valuing Natural Capital (interactive, pdf).

The report lays out the business case that natural resources have real economic value, even if they aren?t traded in markets, and that protecting them can sometimes reduce costs, maintain supplies, soften the blow of future regulation, and build goodwill with customers, communities, and workers. All kind of obvious, at one level, but nonetheless useful to see in print with examples and commitments.

One item that caught my eye is the potential for ?green? infrastructure to replace ?gray?:

Strong, reliable manmade (?gray?) infrastructure undergirds a healthy marketplace, and most companies depend heavily on it to operate effectively and efficiently. Yet increasingly, companies are seeing the enormous potential for ?natural infrastructure? in the form of wetlands and forests, watersheds and coastal habitats to perform many of the same tasks as gray infrastructure ? sometimes better and more cheaply.

For instance, investing in protection of coral reefs and mangroves can provide a stronger barrier to protect coastal operations against flooding and storm surge during extreme weather, while inland flooding can be reduced by strategic investments in catchment forests, vegetation and marshes. Forests are also crucial for maintaining usable freshwater sources, as well as for naturally regulating water flow.

Putting funds into maintaining a wetland near a processing or manufacturing plant can be a more cost- effective way of meeting regulatory requirements than building a wastewater treatment facility, as evidenced by the Dow Chemical Seadrift, Texas facility, where a 110-acre constructed wetland provides tertiary wastewater treatment of five million gallons a day. While the cost of a traditional ?gray?treatment installation averages >$40 million, Dow?s up-front costs were just $1.4 million.

For companies reliant on agricultural systems, improved land management of forests and ecosystems along field edges and streams, along with the introduction of more diversified and resilient sustainable agriculture systems, can minimize dependency on external inputs like artificial fertilizers, pesticides and blue irrigation water.

To encourage such investments, where they make sense, lawmakers and regulators need to focus on performance?is the wastewater getting clean??rather than the use of specific technologies or construction.

China rescues 11 Vietnamese from prostitution

BEIJING ? State media say police in southern China have rescued 11 Vietnamese women who were abducted and forced into prostitution in a border province and are returning them home.

State-run China News Service said Saturday that police in Guangxi province investigated the case in response to a request by Vietnamese police and located the women in Nanning city.

It says the victims were confined to a spa in the city and forced to engage in prostitution, but one woman managed to notify her family in Vietnam.

China News says police arrested one suspect.

Despite repeated police crackdowns, there remains a thriving market for foreign prostitutes in China, especially in border provinces and big cities.

Webb Simpson stays focused, wins U.S. Open

Webb Simpson, U.S. Open champion. (Getty Images)

A good rule for the U.S. Open: Keep your head while those around you are losing theirs. A better rule: Shoot low while others are shooting themselves in the foot.

Webb Simpson did both, erasing a couple early mistakes ? and a four-shot deficit ? to win what turned out to be a nail-biter of a U.S. Open.

Simpson bogeyed two of his first five holes and stood at +5, his hopes apparently vaporized. But then came three straight birdies, and four in five holes, and presto, he was right back in the mix. A fortunate par save on 18, from the exact same spot that Tiger Woods chunked a shot on Saturday, and Simpson found himself in the lead by a stroke and waiting for Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell to finish their final holes.

"It was pretty nerve wracking," Simpson told NBC after earning the winner's check for $1.44 million in the year's second major. "I knew it was a tough golf course.

"I had to go out and do as well as I could. I probably prayed more the last three holes than I've ever done in my life. It helped me stay calm and get in with two under."

[Also: Tiger Woods has devoted, if disappointed, fans]

Both Furyk and McDowell made it interesting; McDowell birdied 17 and missed a 24-foot putt on 18. Furyk, who had held the lead since Friday afternoon, gave up a costly bogey on 16 and put his approach on 18 into the sand. But in the end, both men missed their opportunity, and Webb Simpson had the U.S. Open trophy drop into his hands.

"I thought even though Graeme had a 25-footer, it was probably going to hit the hole or have a good chance," Simpson said.

"I couldn't be happier right now. Congrats to Graeme and Michael for playing great golf."

McDowell had to settle on a T-2nd finish after final round in which he hit only three of 14 fairways off the tee.

"There's a mixture of emotions inside me right now... disappointment, deflation, pride but mostly just frustration," McDowell said.

"That's the U.S. Open. You're supposed to hit it in some fairways. And that was the key today really for me."

There's always irony in golf, and Simpson embodies one such story: He was an Arnold Palmer scholar at Wake Forest, and one of Palmer's most famous defeats came right at Olympic in 1966. He stepped to the tenth tee leading by seven shots, yet fell apart and would lose to Billy Casper in a playoff.

There would be no such playoff for Simpson, who watched calmly in the clubhouse as the two U.S. Open champions tried to match him but fell short. And at just 26 years old, Simpson has many more opportunities to capitalize on his newfound success.

(AP) ? An autopsy on Rodney King is being conducted, but it is not expected to lead to an immediate declaration on what killed him.

San Bernardino County sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller says the autopsy is under way Monday afternoon. She says a cause of death determination will not be made until after investigators have toxicology results, which typically take six to eight weeks.

King was pulled from his pool in Rialto, Calif., early Sunday morning.

The 47-year-old became famous after he was severely beaten by Los Angeles police in 1991. The acquittal and mistrial of four officers tried for felony assault a year later sparked the Los Angeles riots.

Rialto police are investigating King's death as an apparent drowning and say there are no signs of foul play.
