Zimbabwe's President Mugabe, who signed an agreement to co-host a UN tourism conference, now has an honorary position as envoy, despite a long record of human rights abuses.
Zimbabwe?s President Robert Mugabe has just been named the UN?s international envoy for tourism. It?s a special recognition for Mr. Mugabe?s agreement to co-host, with Zambia, a United Nations World Tourism Organization general assembly next August.

Mugabe was quoted by the independent Zimbabwe newspaper NewsDay as saying. ?For the UN World Tourism Organisation, on the other hand, the signatures testify to the confidence and trust that was bestowed upon us.?
That Mugabe, a man who faces a European Union travel ban and economic sanctions because of his repression and torture of opposition activists, would be named a UN envoy for tourism has drawn a certain amount of criticism.
Mr. Mugabe?s ruling party is accused of arresting, detaining, and in some cases killing members of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change during the 2008 national elections. He later formed a coalition government with the MDC, after an 11-month stalemate in which the national currency became worthless and inflation soared to more than 1 million percent.
Mugabe is also blamed for a violent land-reclamation campaign, in which armed thugs stormed and took over the property of white commercial farmers, as well as the?Gukurahundi counterinsurgency campaign in the early 1980s against the rival ZAPO militant group in the Matabeleland region, which killed as many as 20,000 people.
So Mugabe?s selection as UN tourism envoy is not an obvious choice.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) ? Republican Gov. Scott Walker's administration said Wednesday that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has finalized higher job numbers for Wisconsin for 2011, which would blunt one of his opponents' biggest arguments against him just six days before he stands for recall.
However, Walker's Democratic opponent in the recall, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, told reporters that he doesn't believe Walker's administration and he wants to see official confirmation.
"Anybody has a right to be suspicious," Barrett said.
Walker's Department of Workforce Development provided an email to The Associated Press on Wednesday from the bureau's staff that shows it gave final approval to the numbers. The email did not say what number the bureau approved, but Workforce Development spokesman John Dipko said it was 23,608, which would be dramatically better job creation in the state than figures based on a different survey of businesses.
Dipko said the numbers would be provided to the AP on Thursday and published on the state's website Friday.
Though Tuesday's recall was sparked by Walker's proposal effectively ending collective bargaining rights for most state workers, much of the truncated campaign has focused on Walker's performance related to the economy. In an unusual move, Walker released the fresh job creation numbers two weeks ago, before the federal bureau had approved them.
Barrett has accused Walker of "cooking the books" and trying to spin the numbers to his advantage.
The labor bureau isn't scheduled to publish the new numbers until three weeks after the election. No one at the agency's regional office in Chicago answered the phone after hours Wednesday.
However, according to Walker's administration, the final figures confirmed by the bureau show the state gained 23,608 jobs in 2011, rather than losing 33,900 jobs, which was the worst in the nation. That figure would also be 287 higher than the estimate Walker released early.
"You have my personal assurance that is not a made-up number," said Georgia Maxwell, the department's executive assistant.
Walker was jubilant when told of the news after a campaign stop in Janesville.
"More than good news for me, it's good news for the state," a smiling Walker said.
Walker also said Barrett owed people an apology.
Todd Schober, a financial planner and Walker supporter from Racine, said he's always skeptical about what competing campaigns claim but that the positive numbers resonated more with him based on what he's seeing anecdotally.
"I just think we're heading in the right direction," he said.
Even with the improved numbers for 2011, Walker is far from meeting his campaign promise to create 250,000 jobs. He's on pace to create just over 94,000.
A Marquette University Law School released Wednesday poll showed Walker with a narrow 7-point lead over Barrett, 52 percent to 45 percent. The poll's margin of error was 4.1 percentage points. In the same poll two weeks ago Walker held a 6-point lead, 50 percent to 44 percent.
The latest random telephone poll of 600 likely voters was done between May 23 and Thursday.
The poll also showed that more respondents ? 50 percent to 43 percent ? believed Walker would do a better job with the economy than Barrett. That is similar to two weeks ago, when Walker held a 48-41 edge on that question. That question polled 720 registered voters and had a smaller 3.7 percentage point margin of error.
Meanwhile, out-of-state donors kept pumping cash into Walker's campaign last month.
Reports filed with state elections officials Tuesday show Walker, aided by a quirk in state law that eliminates contribution limits for recall targets, collected $5.9 million between April 24 and Wednesday. Almost two-thirds of that money ? $3.7 million ? came from contributors who listed an address outside Wisconsin.
Barrett, meanwhile, raised $3.4 million between April 24 and Wednesday, with 70 percent of his money coming from donors with Wisconsin addresses, the reports showed.
Barrett has raised a total of $4.2 million since he jumped into the recall race in late March, while Walker has raised $31 million since winning office.

Other types of interviewing techniques include "panel," where multiple people interview one person; "resume," where the interviewer asks questions based only on the resume; and "free form," where the questions tend to be more creative in style. For example, a "free form" interview question could be "What kind of tree are you?"

Usher is nearing the release of his new album Looking 4 Myself. And to get fans excited for it, he unveiled the track listing and cover art this week.
The cover teases the "more artistic" tracks he has in store. In a close-up shot of his profile, Usher sports a neck tattoo that matches the artsy images in the background.
On it, he's got collaborations with Rick Ross on "Lemme See," Pharrell on "Twisted," and Luke Steele on the album's title track, according to Hiphop-n-More. For those unfamiliar with Steele, he's from the Australian synth-pop duo Empire of the Sun. He also appeared on Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 and co-wrote the track "Rather Die Young" on Beyoncé's 4.
Usher already has teased fans about what they can expect from the June 12 release with the sultry single "Climax," the party track "Scream" and the R&B thumper "Lemme See." He previewed the album at a special performance of the off-Broadway show "Fuerza Bruta" in New York City in April.
"There's a lot there to keep fans tuning in. It's a ton of other experiences and a ton of other walks ... as I've had this long journey over the last year [and] every bit of what I've experienced I've put into a creative, artistic way," he told MTV News about the album. "This is more artistic of an album than I've had in history."

ScienceDaily (Apr. 30, 2012) ? A team of chemical engineers led by Paul J. Dauenhauer of the University of Massachusetts Amherst has discovered a new, high-yield method of producing the key ingredient used to make plastic bottles from biomass. The process is inexpensive and currently creates the chemical p-xylene with an efficient yield of 75-percent, using most of the biomass feedstock, Dauenhauer says.
The research is published in the journal ACS Catalysis.
Dauenhauer, an assistant professor of chemical engineering at UMass Amherst, says the new discovery shows that there is an efficient, renewable way to produce a chemical that has immediate and recognizable use for consumers. He says the plastics industry currently produces p-xylene from petroleum and that the new renewable process creates exactly the same chemical from biomass.
'You can mix our renewable chemical with the petroleum-based material and the consumer would not be able to tell the difference," Dauenhauer says.
Consumers will already know the plastics made from this new process by the triangular recycling label "#1" on plastic containers. Xylene chemicals are used to produce a plastic called PET (or polyethylene terephthalate), which is currently used in many products including soda bottles, food packaging, synthetic fibers for clothing and even automotive parts.
The new process uses a zeolite catalyst capable of transforming glucose into p-xylene in a three-step reaction within a high-temperature biomass reactor. Dauenhauer says this is a major breakthrough since other methods of producing renewable p-xylene are either expensive (e.g., fermentation) or are inefficient due to low yields.
A key to the success of this new process is the use of a catalyst that is specifically designed to promote the p-xylene reaction over other less desirable reactions. Dauenhauer says his research colleagues, professors Wei Fan of UMass Amherst and Raul Lobo of the University of Delaware, designed the catalyst. After a series of modifications, the team was able to help enhance the yield of the reaction. He also says additional modification of the process can further boost p-xylene yield and make the process more economically attractive.
"We discovered that the performance of the biomass reaction was strongly affected by the nanostructure of the catalyst, which we were able to optimize and achieve 75-percent yield," Fan says. Computations conducted by the team have been instrumental in understanding the reaction mechanism and the role of the catalyst as well as making alteration to the catalyst to improve the yield of the process.
Besides Dauenhauer and Fan, the research team is made up of UMass Amherst's C. Luke Williams and Chun-Chih Chang, doctoral students in chemical engineering, and their collaborators, professors Raul F. Lobo, Dionisios G. Vlachos and Stavros Caratzoulas, as well as doctoral student Nima Nikbin, and postdoctoral fellow Phuong Do from the University of Delaware.
This discovery is a part of a larger effort by the Catalysis Center for Energy Innovation (CCEI) to create breakthrough technologies for the production of biofuels and chemicals from lignocellulosic biomass. The center is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy as part of the Energy Frontiers Research Center (EFRC) program which combines more than 20 faculty members with complimentary research skills to collaborate on solving the world's most pressing energy challenges.
The discovery for the production of plastics adds another dimension to the portfolio of accomplishments of CCEI. In 2010, a CCEI research team led by Mark Davis of Caltech discovered a new catalyst, called Tin-Beta, which can convert glucose into fructose. This is the first step in the production of a large number of targeted products including biofuels and biochemicals, including p-xylene, from the building block of cellulose, the major constituent of trees and switchgrass.
In addition, a team led by Ray Gorte and John Vohs at the University of Pennsylvania has developed a novel fuel cells technology that converts solid biomass to electricity and another led by George Huber and Wei Fan of UMass Amherst has improved the yield to aromatics that can be used as drop-in fuels to gasoline.
