The Benefits of A Self-Enhanced View of You:New Findings ...

Do you think you have an inflated sense of self?

Do you have positive illusions about the way you compare with others, make decisions, control your circumstances?

While this enhanced self-perception may not, particularly in the extreme, cause you to win friends and influence people ? it may actually serve you well in buffering stress and coping with adversity.

A recent study by Gupta and Bonanno gathered longitudinal data to examine the relationship between self-enhancement and adjustment of college students to potentially traumatic events over their four years. It is the only study to date using on-going reactions instead of post trauma retrospective reports.

• The researchers used Paulhus? ?Self-Deceptive Enhancement Scale? to measure self-enhancement. As such, the issue of whether biased perceptions of self could promote mental health coping was put in the forefront because this scale measured unrealistic or overly positive self-perceptions in 20 self-descriptive statements like,? I am very confident in my judgments,? ?I always know why I like things,? ?My first impressions of people usually turn out to be right.?
• The 101 student participants completed the ?Self-Deceptive Enhancement Scale? as well as other self-report measures of distress and social desirability a month after they began college and four years later.
• Every week over the course of the four years, with the exception of a retrospective view of the summer, participants filled in an on-line questionnaire to report if they had experienced a potentially traumatic event (i.e. death of someone close, divorce of parents, serious illness etc.) and if so, the degree of distress it caused from 0 to 4.

The findings are interesting and significant.

• Most student participants experienced a mean of 4.4 potentially traumatic events over the course of the four years.
• For those students with low self-enhancement scores, the increase from low to high potentially traumatic events resulted in a significant positive increase in fourth-year distress.
• For those students who scored high on self-enhancement scores, there was no significant increase in distress in the fourth year, even when they also experienced an increase from low to high potentially traumatic events ? and even in face of the events they reported to be most stressful ? suicide, serious injury or illness.
• The evidence demonstrates that self-enhancement serves as a buffer against the harmful impact and distress of trauma.

?Why Does A Self-Enhanced View of Self Serve As A Buffer In The Face Of Traumatic Events?

As the researchers suggest, when someone has experienced highly aversive and threatening events, their sense of self, judgment, mastery and control has been assaulted. As Boulanger suggests, they have been ? wounded by reality.? Coping and recovery necessitate dealing with a sense of helplessness to recover a more positive view of self.

It would seem that a positive, self-enhanced view of self, while biased and not strictly defined by reality, may make it easier to re-frame, re-define and re-instate a self who can manage and cope despite obstacles or changes in life?s parameters.

The Power of Positive Thinking and Illusions After Trauma

• On a personal note, what this study offers us is further validation of the power of the positive in healing in the aftermath of trauma. It underscores the merit of believing in ourselves to make possible what seems impossible to bear.

• The Taylor Brown Positive Illusions Formulation ? This is a workable formulation for applying a positive perspective to life?s uncharted paths. Taylor and Brown propose and find in their research that when not reflecting a maladaptive extreme- Positive Illusions About Self, Illusions of Control and Unrealistic Optimism are associated with mental health and coping in the face of trauma and aversive events.

Positive Illusions: Most of us have them. For example, studies show that most people rate themselves ?better than average? in driving, leadership, and athletic abilities, teaching ability etc.? Such illusions carry with them a sense of psychological well-being. They help us find a way not to sweat the small stuff and to find a way to manage the big stuff.

It is to the advantage of the accident patient to feel ?I am healing better than most.? ?I will be back to driving quicker than the doctor expected.? ?I am a smart patient ? I understand what I have to do.?

Illusions of Control: Most people believe that they can control more than they actually can in life. What is important and relevant to improved coping is that people do switch their control related beliefs as life and the unexpected intrude. For example, the cancer patient switches from survival or complete cure to control of symptoms and life tasks.

It the belief that you can still make a difference ? still exert control that is positive and health promoting. Whether it is to re-define a way to work or to plan to race with a prosthesis ? in new domains control continues and is associated with good adjustment.

Unrealistic Optimism: Perhaps what makes optimism such a gift is that it is not grounded in reality. Studies suggest that most people anticipate that their future will be brighter than can be reasonably justified statistically. That?s the importance of optimism ? it is about hope and possibilities.

Traumatologist and Advocate for International Victim?s Rights, Yael Daneli described that when she worked with survivors in Rwanda, the adults could not look past the reality of death and destruction to hope but when she told the children that no one could take away their dreams ? they got it ? they had hope.

Another Innovative Skills Program: Vermont Law School's General Practice Program

Vermont Law School's General Practice Program incorporates the principles of the Carnegie Report in all of its 12 courses, which are simulation-based and taught by a team of regular and adjunct faculty.

"The General Practice Program (GPP) complements the traditional JD curriculum, preparing students to be general practitioners who must provide a range of legal services. The program also provides an alternative for those students who learn best in a hands-on manner. The program meshes substantive law with professional skills; classes are structured to simulate a law firm with professors acting as senior partners, overseeing the student 'associates' as they perform a broad range of legal activities?leading role-playing clients through divorce proceedings, conducting title searches, providing legal counsel for school districts, handling employment grievance cases, producing wills, preparing for civil and criminal court appearances?in and outside of classes. Students are exposed to the legal professional culture through their interactions with GPP faculty, student colleagues, and their mentors in the Mentorship Project."

"The GPP is a two-year, four-semester program, for second- and third-year students. Each semester has from one to four components totaling four credit hours. The components, taught by a mix of regular faculty and experienced practitioners, may include: GPP I: Domestic Relations GPP II: Real Estate Transactions/Environmental Problem-Solving/Commercial Transactions/Employment Law GPP III: Criminal Law/Representing Entrepreneurial Business/International Intellectual Property GPP IV: Estate Planning/Personal Injury Law/Municipal Law/Landlord-Tenant/Bankruptcy."

I have spent so much space on this program because I think it can serve as a model for other law schools who want to do something different. It prepares graduates for general practice, which is what many of our graduates actually do. (What an innovative idea!) It is not Vermont's only program. Vermont also prepares lawyers in a more traditional way, and it is known for its environmental program. Let's give our students options, like Vermont has.

SEATTLE (AP) ? Two U.S. senators are asking Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate whether employers asking for Facebook passwords during job interviews are violating federal law, their offices announced Sunday.

Troubled by reports of the practice, Democratic Sens. Chuck Schumer of New York and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut said they are calling on the Department of Justice and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to launch investigations. The senators are sending letters to the heads of the agencies.

The Associated Press reported last week that some private and public agencies around the country are asking job seekers for their social media credentials. The practice has alarmed privacy advocates, but the legality of it remains murky.

On Friday, Facebook warned employers not to ask job applicants for their passwords to the site so they can poke around on their profiles. The company threatened legal action against applications that violate its long-standing policy against sharing passwords.

A Facebook executive cautioned that if an employer discovers that a job applicant is a member of a protected group, the employer may be vulnerable to claims of discrimination if it doesn't hire that person.

Personal information such as gender, race, religion and age are often displayed on a Facebook profile ? all details that are protected by federal employment law.

"We don't think employers should be asking prospective employees to provide their passwords because we don't think it's the right thing to do. While we do not have any immediate plans to take legal action against any specific employers, we look forward to engaging with policy makers and other stakeholders, to help better safeguard the privacy of our users," Facebook said in a statement.

Not sharing passwords is a basic tenet of online conduct. Aside from the privacy concerns, Facebook considers the practice a security risk.

In Massachusetts, state Democratic Rep. Cheryl Coakly-Rivera also filed a similar bill Friday that also expands to include personal email. Her measure also bars employers from "friending" a job applicant to view protected Facebook profiles or using similar methods for other protected social media websites.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. Female mosquitoes require energy for their egg development, which they acquire from vertebrate blood. But by sucking on blood, they become vectors of numerous disease pathogens of human and domestic animals. If the mechanisms that govern their egg production are better understood, novel approaches to controlling the reproduction and population of mosquitoes can be devised.

Now a research team led by Alexander Raikhel, a distinguished professor of entomology at the University of California, Riverside, has received a five-year $2.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study the molecular basis of hormonal regulation of mosquito reproduction.

The researchers will focus on deciphering the genes involved in mediating the action of hormones involved during egg production in mosquitoes specifically, Aedes aegypti, the mosquito that spreads dengue and yellow fever.

"What we are setting out to do is introduce birth control, based on hormones, in mosquitoes," said Raikhel, an expert in the molecular biology of mosquitoes and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. "Our task is to find a way to interrupt the host-seeking behavior of mosquitoes by manipulating their hormones and thus interrupting their egg development.

With egg development halted, the population of mosquitoes would eventually collapse."

Nearly 2.5 billion people are at risk for contracting dengue fever. Each year, there are 100 million cases of dengue in the world. Yellow fever results in 30,000 deaths per year; about 200,000 cases are reported each year.

Raikhel explained that a hormone unique to insects, called the "juvenile hormone," plays a key role in transforming a young female adult to a mature one that is capable of blood feeding, egg development, and thus spreading pathogens. The absence of this hormone in the body of the female mosquito impedes the growth of the mosquito to the adult stage. For the mosquito to reach the adult stage, levels of this hormone must first rise and then drop.

"This hormone is crucial for egg development," Raikhel said. "If we can figure out how its levels can be manipulated so that egg development is prevented, we can reduce the number of mosquitoes."

Each mosquito cell has a receptor for the juvenile hormone. The exact nature of this receptor, however, has eluded researchers for many years.

"In this project, we plan also to understand the structure and function of this receptor," Raikhel said. "One reason this receptor has been very difficult to study is that, unlike other receptors like it, it does not lie on the surface of the cell. Instead it lies inside the cell."

Raikhel's lab will attempt to block the action of the juvenile hormone's receptors.

"Several levels of interception can be designed in the lab so that no egg development in mosquitoes results," he said.

While his lab will focus in this project on only Aedes aegypti, the methods developed can be applied also to other disease-spreading mosquitoes.

Raikhel is recognized internationally for his significant contributions to insect science and vector biology. A leader in insect and mosquito reproduction and immunity, he is the author or coauthor of more than 160 research papers in international peer-reviewed scientific journals and books.

His research team includes the following researchers at UC Riverside: Tusar Saha, Zhen Zou, and Sang Woon Shin, all of whom work in Raikhel's lab; and Thomas Girke, an associate professor of bioinformatics.
